Ten Best Places to Eat in Downtown Reno

As many well-fed travelers know, the best place to get a meal is to follow the locals to their favorites for either vittles or fine dining .  Though Reno has numerous great places to eat, many are within a few of miles of the downtown area. Here are ten of the local's favorites, in no particular order:

Fourth Street Bistro - 3065 4th Street.        323-3200        The cuisine is excellent.  Whether you dine on the halibut, lamb, duck, or one of the other delectable entrees or salads, your palette will certainly be pleased.  The service is first class and the desserts sinful.  Worth every penny.  You will return.

Bertha Miranda's Mexican Restaurant - 336 Mill Street.   786-9697           Authentic Mexican food at its best. Comfortable, open setting with traditional Mexican atmosphere puts you in the mood for a margarita and home-made tortilla chips.  Reasonably priced.  Family friendly.

Pneumatic Diner - 501 First Street (upstairs in the Truckee River Plaza)                      786-8888                                                 Terrific vegetarian and vegan fare offering waffles, pastas, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Reasonably priced.

Casale's Halfway Club - 2501 E. Fourth Street.  323-3979 Authentic Italian fare made by the same Italian family for at least 50 years.  Mama Inez makes all the food herself, even the pasta (no pasta machine at work here!), and brings it to your table.  Order either the spaghetti or ravioli (or half and half) and you will feel Italian.  The garlic bread is so good it's hard not to get stuffed on it while sipping wine.  Don't expect anything fancy here.  This place is made to comfort and please, not impress with finery.

Peg's Glorified Ham and Egg's - 420 South Sierra. 329-2600   One of Reno's best breakfast eateries.  They serve lunch, too, but it's rare to see anyone not order breakfast.  Fresh-squeezed orange juice, delicious (but huge) omelettes, and yummy hash browns are enough to get you through most of the day.  Be warned - there is usually a wait, but it's not too long and it's worth it.  Peg's has opened a larger, second location, but it is further from the downtown area at 6300 Mae Anne Ave.

PHO 777 Vietnamese Noodle Restaurant - 201 E. Second      323-7777        Consistently voted favorite Vietnamese food in the area, this place has the best noodle soups, rice dishes, beef dishes and beef soups around.  The prices border on cheap but be warned - they only accept cash.

Bavarian World - 595 Valley Road.     323-7646                     The best, most authentic German restaurant for miles.  You will find a large restaurant, bar, dance floor, and bakery (divine!) that makes you feel you just came down the Alps. Schnitzels, sauerbraten, fish, sausages, Bavarian beers, German wines and cocktails.  Sit back and enjoy.

Sushi Pier - 1290 E. Plumb (near the airport, across from Costco)     825-6776      Ask any local, and this is the hand's down favorite for fresh sushi.  Many a skeptic (sushi? in Reno?) become converts after being introduced to Sushi Pier.  They serve many familiar rolls along with some of their own, plus the favorite all-you-can-eat.

LuLou's - 1470 S. Virginia Street   329-9979                      Fine American dining at it's best.  Classy, with high ceilings and stark white table cloths give the feel of crispness.  The romantic atmosphere is best when the kids are left with the nanny.  One sign of a good restaurant is when the owners can be found working the front room and which is often the case here.  This is a dining experience you will not forget but will definitely want to relive.  Very pricey, but you won't care.

Zozo's Ristorante - 3446 Lakeside Drive   829-9449             This is a local's favorite for a more Old-World style atmosphere Italian restaurant.  Choose from a list of mouth-watering pastas and sandwiches for lunch or dinner entrees that include fabulous mushroom ravioli, veal saltimboca, and cioppino.  A nice wine from their varied selection rounds out the meal.
