Jerabek's New Bohemian in St. Paul

Ever since I first drove by Jerabek's when I first moved to this side of town, I have been fascinated with all that is going on there. On the corner of Winifred and Stryker, Jerabek's is a combination coffeehouse, restaurant, bakery, cool place to hang out, gift store, and vintage clothing and housewares boutique. I love going in there and checking out their bulletin board to learn what apartments in the ...

Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul

I went to an event at the Minnesota State Capitol today. (It is the first time I have been in the Capitol since I was sworn in as a member of the bar way back in 1984 and maybe I am remembering that incorrectly!) The event today was "Eyes Wide Open"  an exhibit and a ceremony that presents a memorial to those who have been killed, injured, or otherwise adversely affected ...

The Village at Mendota Heights just south of St. Paul off Dodd Road

I went to get my hair cut today to the little Village at Mendota Heights and had a few extra minutes to check out the other shops in this cute, new little shopping center surrounded by condo and apartment complexes. I found The Sage Market and Wine Bar, The Wine Market, and E's Cheese. I was delighted!

The Sage Market and Wine Bar are an adorable food market and deli with ...

St. Paul's Bandana Square

I was in my old "stompin' grounds" this morning. I went up to Bandana Square which is off Energy Park Drive close to where I lived years ago with my family while I attended Hamline Law School. Bandana Square was just being developed at that time in the early 80's if I remember correctly.

It is an entire complex of historic buildings that were originally part of a passenger rail service. ...

El Gato Azul / The Blue Cat Cafe: Cute St. Paul Westside Coffee Shop

When they were going to open their coffee shop on Cesar Chavez Street a couple of years ago, The Blue Cat Cafe owners brain-stormed for a good name. They came up with a great one, I think-easy, catchy, helpful to Spanish-speakers as they are learning English.

Apparently, the name makes it very easy to buy the owners presents, as well. They say they had never realized how many depictions, in how many varieties ...

Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center St. Paul

After Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife and Sheila and two of their children were killed in a plane crash just before 2002 election, the US Congress passed legislation that appropriated money to build a center at the Neighborhood House in the heart of the district where they lived. The Wellstone Center opened in December of 2005. It is a beautiful building on St. Paul's westside, giving the city an ...

St. Paul Politics at the Blair Arcade Building

One of the neatest neighborhoods in St. Paul is Cathedral Hill (So-named because of the Cathedral of St. Paul which is subject of an earlier post on this blog). A unique corner of that neighborhood is at the intersection of Selby and Virginia Streets, which has the Blair Arcade Building.

I hadn't been in the building before, except to visit Nina's Coffee Shop (subject of a future blog) and Garrison Keillor's book store, (also ...

The Cathedral of St. Paul

While my friend visited over the weekend, we visited the Cathedral of St. Paul, a beautiful domed cathedral on the hills overlooking the city. Originally founded at about the same time as the City of St. Paul, the cathedral has gone through four different building changes. The current building is a vast equal-armed cross with a soaring dome that caused my spirit to fly as I walked and sat beneath it.

 We ...

St. Paul's Wabasha Street Caves

Below the bluffs of the Mississippi River on St. Paul's historic west side is one of the City's most interesting historic treasures--The Wabasha Street Caves. Originally merely the clifts and bluffs of sandstone designed by the flow of the Mississippi, then dug out in the late 1800's by miners extracting the fine sand, the Wabasha Street Caves have as much St. Paul history behind them as most any other site in ...
