Minneapolis has Sun, Snow, and Fun for One Last Weekend

If you’re an outdoor winter enthusiast, and find yourself in the Minneapolis area this weekend, enjoy one last hurrah. Two of the best places to go in and around the city are Theodore Wirth Park and Hyland Park.

Skiing 230
For cross country skiing, snowboarding and sledding right in the city head to Theodore Wirth Park. The largest park in Minneapolis, Wirth is so extensive that I often find it difficult to remember that I’m in the middle of a city. The Snowboarding area includes a Straight Rail, Rainbow Rail, Battleship Boxes and 20-foot C Boxes. The site also has lights and snowmaking capabilities. Rates are very reasonable. A Ski pass is $4 and rentals are available for $8.50. The Snowboarding special offers an hour and a half lesson, day pass and lift ticket for $30 (calling ahead works best for scheduling lessons). Snowboard rental, which includes boots and a helmet, is $15.

If you are a downhill skier and can’t head to Minnesota ski resorts Lutsen or Welch for the weekend, try Hyland Park in Bloomington—just 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Hyland has 12 runs including two freestyle terrain runs that cater to snowboarders. With 35''-53'' of snow cover, conditions are good; but with the balmy 40-degree weather don't expect it to last past the weekend. An adult day pass, including lift ticket, is $28. Ski rental is $19 and snowboard packages are $27. Ask about half day rates if you plan to leave before 3:00pm or start skiing after 3:00pm.
