Figlio: A Modern Tradition in Uptown, Minneapolis

Figlio is the center of Calhoun Square; a comforting constant amidst the ephemeral flutter of Uptown's changing storefronts. It's clear to see why: this Uptown establishment serves up some of the best food in town, and they serve it into the wee hours, and it seems as though every time you turn around, it's time for the $2.00 happy hour splendor.

The menu at Figlio is rife with classy renditions of old favorites. Take the bacon-cheeseburger: Figlio's mammoth version sports savory thick-cut bacon and herbed stracchino cheese, on a home made focaccia bun. At ten bucks, it's a bit pricier than your average burger, but it's so much bigger and better... and the servers have never batted an eye at my request to sub garlic-braised spinach or steamed asparagus for the potatoes.

Also famous at Figlio are the personal-sized wood-oven pizzas, ($12.95, but some mini versions are available for two bucks at happy hour!) and a wide array of luscious pastas, such as the decadent, Baked Artichoke Ravioli, which is stuffed with gorgonzola, and roasted in a mix of cream, peppers and mozzarella. ($15.95)

And finally, there is the ever-important subject of happy hour. Figlio offers $2 house wine, (Coastal Ridge!) tap beers and appetizers, Monday through Friday, from 4-7pm. On Saturday, it's noon to 7pm. On Sunday, the whole day is happy! And how could it not be, with $2 mini-burgers and pizzas?
