Minneapolis Coffee, Neighborhood Style
The next time you crave a coffee in Minneapolis, why not skip the Starbucks in favor of discovering one of the city's many independent coffeehouses? Here are five neighborhood favorites, appropriate not only for the quick latte to-go, but also for lingering over a local newspaper, snacking on scones or sandwiches, and soaking up some neighborhood vibe:
Spyhouse – Classic Bohemian-style coffeehouse with excellent beans and an arty clientèle. Were it not for the city-wide smoking ban, one could certainly imagine the black-clad customers hunkering down over their art mags under a blueish Gauloise-haze. (2451 Nicollet Ave S. Minneapolis, MN 55404, 612- 871-3177)
Anodyne – Is it possible to be both hip and humble at once? If so, this little shop has done it. Situated in a decidedly family-neighborhood, Anodyne is also a favorite for artists and writers, but this particular set is a bit older, and have the look of success in their crafts, if the Volvos and baby carriages are any indication. (4301 Nicollet Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55409, 612-824-4300)
Moose & Sadie's – This long-time downtown establishment has recently remodeled and expanded its scope to include an impressive menu as well as the requisite espresso bar. When weather is clear, the outdoor seating can't be beat, especially if the neighboring model agencies and photography studios are busy with appointments... (212 3rd Av. N., Minneapolis, MN 55401, 612-371-0464)
Bob's Java Hut – Awesome coffee meets biker-bar culture at this local shop. It's open year-round, but this place is best in good weather, when the proprietors open massive front windows toward the motorcycle-lined street in front. (2651 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55408, 612-871-4485)
The Bean Scene – Can you imagine a former Burger King, (complete with drive-through window) turned into a neighborhood coffeehouse and wine bar, of all things? Neither could I before I visited, but that's just what the Bean Scene is. It's the only drive-through coffee shop in Minneapolis, and as far as I can tell, also the only one that offers computer terminals for free use by customers (as well as wifi for your laptop, of course.) (2220 West Broadway, Minneapolis, MN 55411, 612-588-JAVA.)
