See Walker at the Walker in Minneapolis
The First Survey of Kara Walker’s work, “My Complement, My Enemy, Oppressor, My Love" is open at Walker Art Center now through May 13. Cut paper is her medium of choice and slavery her topic. Not for the faint of heart, the exhibit explores the history of American slavery using images of sexual exploitation and violence. Huge black silhouettes ogle, copulate, and dance on curved white walls. Cut-paper puppets play out vignettes on the same topic at several points throughout the exhibit. At once disturbing and beautiful, the exhibit will certainly make an impression.
"Body Politics: Figurative Prints and Drawings from Schiele to De Kooning" provides a companion exhibit exploring the relationship of art, society and the human form during the first half of the 20th century. This show is up through July 15th.
The Walker Art Center specializes in 20th century and contemporary art. In addition to traveling shows, it also displays an extensive permanent collection. The Walker Art Center is located at 1750 Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. Adult Admission is $8.00. However, Thursday evenings from 5-9 are free and feature special events. The first Saturday of every month is also free, along with family friendly activities (signs are posted outside galleries that may not be appropriate for younger viewers).
