The Salty Dog Seafood Grille and Bar

One of our favorite hidden-away food stops is a hip-pocket bar-restaurant of the most Bostonian kind on Quincy Market’s south side.

The Salty Dog, featuring fresh seafood, with eat-in or take-out service, is kitty-corner from Faneuil Hall, a few steps beneath the historic Quincy Market building itself.

Service is friendly, and the polished curved bar is a popular after-work drop-in spot, with an outdoor bar serving cold drinks and light fare in good weather.

Adjacent to the pocket-sized indoor bar is a small, intimate dining room serving classic New England fare. The cozy ambience of this room resembles the interior of a sailing vessel, with dark wood furnishings, fine fish portraits, a life-size wooden likeness of a sea captain clad in a yellow Macintosh and a vintage15-foot sign with gilded letters adding to the ambience, reading, "Seamens' Dining Room. Dinners starting at 25 cents."

The fresh seafood is of the finest quality, thanks to an ongoing relationship with the same knowledgeable purveyors for more than twelve years. Owner/manger Luke Prevost cut his business teeth here, having begun his career at the Salty Dog at the tender age of twelve.

After a tete-a-tete over a delicious dinner in the intimate room with ship's lanterns for lighting, we head on out for a stroll to the nearby North End--always a good stop for an espresso and authentic Bella Italia experience.
