What more could modern day, city traveling, young adults like more than a restaurant/coffee shop/bar? City Cafe, nestled neatly into Downtown Baltimore offers all these things in a modern sophistication that doesn't gouge you're wallet for every cents you have.

James Joyce Restaurant

Steve is a human bloodhound. His first comment on any person, room, or restaurant is it’s smell. On that basis he immediately liked James Joyce. We stopped in for drinks with our friend Carrie, and before we left I too noticed the aroma of old wood and expensive cigars, a pleasant lingering smell that somehow has no relation to the noxious fumes of a burning stogie.

James Joyce is ...

Ixia

Ixia deserves a slightly hipper language than English. Something with more words for swank or bizarre is required, because in English it’s hard to describe how the blue walls and crystal chandeliers and paintings of dancing skeletons translate into something stylish but without the self-importance of the style-dives of Manhattan.

My date and I debated the cocktail menu until the bartenders could stand it no longer. They asked if ...

The Can Company in Canton

If you have a love the repurposing of old spaces, then this is the shopping/dining spot for you. The Can Company, located on Boston Street in Canton, is the epitome of cool and concientious re-lifing of old space. The building was originally an old aluminum and tin can production facility, it sat mostly vacant for years.

Listed on the EPA's Smart Growth website as a space that "Fosters Distintive/Attractive Communities with a Strong Sense ...

Recher Theater

The theater tends to attract a younger crowd, high school and college kids mostly. Upcoming shows include Flyleaf, Godhead, Lennex, Cinder Road, and a Sublime Tribute band called Badfish. Occasionally you will get some ...

The Admiral's Cup

The Admiral’s Cup holds one of the best locations in Fells Point, right on the corner where Broadway smacks into the water. It also has this weird box-like wood contraption at the foot of the bar. See, in the place of a rail, which most bars have at the bottom of the front of the bar, the bar at the Admiral’s Cup has a six inch piece of wood, creating a six inch deep box at the foot of the bar. My buddy surmised that once upon a time (hopefully not any more) the Admiral’s Cup may have been the kind of bar where you could urinate while drinking.

Rafters

Rafters has all the polish of a sailor at the end of a three day binge. When I asked for a shot of liquid cocaine, the bartender said “what the f*ck’s liquid cocaine?” He made me and my friends liquid heroine instead. That started off a lineup of shots including a Rafter’s special that tasted like Five-Alive and must have had caffeine in it because it kept my ...

Fort Charles is the King of Dives

If you’re uncomfortable in Fort Charles it’s because you brought it in with you, or perhaps because you don’t like cigarette smoke. I visit Fort Charles on weekdays for lunch and occasionally for a beer before work (I’m a bartender, I’m allowed to go to work with one beer down). I can’t say what the DJ’s play on Friday and Saturday, but the music is recycled classic rock during the week and the place rarely has more than a few people in it.
