Zen West

Cafe Zen is my favorite Chinese food ever. Zen West is not my favorite Tex-Mex food. I went to Zen West, on York Road in Northern Baltimore, with Mom this Mother’s day (why am I posting this now? I’ve been busy. Buzz off.) The interior is as slick as the next door Cafe Zen and the hostess quite cute. Besides the two gay guys,

Survivor 7

I’m not in shape! Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to a long, painful seven miles while running the Survivor Harbor 7 this Sunday. The weather should be nice since we run before it gets too hot, and I’m excited in general to be part of a race for a cause like this. The Survivor 7 is dedicated to survivors of serious illness. It’s the fourth largest race in Maryland and ...

The Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center is my favorite place in Baltimore.  I have been there with kids ages 4 to 40, and all have had a good time.

Start by exploring weather, climate, and the world.  Witness a miniature tornado or shape sand dunes by controlling the wind.  See if you can catch a blue crab on camera.  Then mosey on back to dig for dinosaurs, assemble a skeleton, learn from one ...

The National Aquarium - My Guide

You can certainly find more information and better reviews of the National Aquarium on their website (http://www.aqua.org/) or any number of Baltimore tourism pages, so what I have to offer here are my personal highlights and suggestions for maximizing your aquarium visit.

1) Take your time!  There is a lot to see, but you will miss many hidden gems and quirky fish behaviors if you barrel through.  Read ...

Baltimore Summer Festivals

If you're like me, summer time means festival season.  Here are some highlights of several festivals for this summer.

Baltimore Pride: June 16, 17.  Saturday on the streets of Mt Vernon for a parade and Sunday in Druid Hill Park for food, live music, picnics, and more.   Drag queen shows, queen of pride competetion, live performances, so much fun. I have been the past 3 years and have loved every ...

Baltimore Farmers' Market

The Baltimore Farmer's Market ...think street festival with vegetables.

The Market, located underneath the Jones Falls Expressway, at Holiday and Saratoga Streets (near City Hall) opened for the season, and was in full bloom Sunday.  It has what you'd expect at a farmers' market- lots of vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants, mushrooms, flowers and farm related products like honey,  smoked meats and sausages. There was a great buy on cheese from Hawks ...

The "Original" Washington Monument

Baltimore's Washington Monument was erected between 1815 and 1829, some 20 years before construction began on the Washington Monument in D.C.  Baltimoreans contest that this monument is the true Washington Monument, and turn their noses at the landmark of the National Mall. Whatever your opinion, this Mount Vernon attraction is certainly worth a second look.

Baltimore

The Washngton Monument is 178 feet high.  If you ...

Spencer Hangs Himself

Spencer Horsman hanged himself fifty feet outside his new bar and escaped two straight jackets. All told it was probably good he hanged himself, because the restless mob was about ready to lynch someone when at 9:45 the promised 9:00 feat had yet to begin.

Spencer put on a great show once suspended. He squirmed with dramatic showmanship, as if desperate to get out of what he’d gotten himself into, ...

Best Restaurant in Baltimore

The Brewer's Art
1106 N. Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21201

Located in the heart of Mt Vernon, The Brewer's Art remains my favorite restaurant in Baltimore. The scene is eclectic, low lighting with constantly changing artwork decorating the walls. There are two bars located on the premises but the restaurant portion of the establishment remains quiet, romantic, and conducive to a nice night on the town. The menu ...

Cross Street Market

Cross Street InteriorCross Street Market

Just south of the Harbor is one of Baltimore’s best local markets, Cross Street Market. Much of Cross Street is Noah’s arc style: two of everything. Two bakers, two produce stands, two meat and poultry stands, and two florists allow you to do a little leisurely comparison shopping. (If you’re looking for ...
