Rub

South of the SOBO skanks and pushers, at the very tip of Federal Hill in what should probably be called Port Covington, lies Rub.

Rub has cream soda on tap. It’s delicious! I could possibly place my face under that cream soda tap and drink for hours, although drinking it from the giant mason jar they serve non-acoholic beverages in is fun too. They also have their own beers on tap, and a large menu of drinks involving Jim Beam and lemonade and Red Bull in various combinations.

AND Rub has corn pudding, and it’s amazing. Amazing. Next time I go in I’m going to order a bucket of it. That’s probably all I’ll eat because honestly, the brisket and ribs were just OK. If your neighborhood tavern serves dry brisket it’s no big deal, but this is Rub. Barbecued meat is all they do. That’s like Dunkin’ Donuts making bad donuts.

I shall return to Rub. There’s a lot on their menu I haven’t tried and I like the place. The people there, staff and patrons, are all cool, even though the staff’s collared shirts make them look exactly like car mechanics. Plus, I like walking down Light Street and seeing the sketchiest of South Baltimore sitting on their stoops.

Dress is real casual, and a website apparently non-existent. What’s with restaurants not having websites? Come on, this is 2007.
Rub is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

I have eaten there several times and I will definitely be back. I agree the staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a Wednesday hump day party with a $10 bottomless cup and I have definitely drank my money's worth! I will say this about the meat; most people say it is "okay" and I believe there is a reason for that. Rub does not drown their meat in sauces and flavors like some other places do. Good authentic Q is about the temperature of the meat and its natural flavors. The table side sauces are there on purpose. For those that want to add some spice, the sauce supply is unlimited (3 kinds but use as much as you want). I would say the meats are cooked to a perfect temperature, and the Q is very good. The sausage is excellent and the chicken is perfect. The Ribs and brisket are cooked to perfection, but may need the table side sauces to suite each palate. Definitely worth a second visit and definitely worth checking out the rest of the menu. (psst, try the green beans and sweet potato fries if you want the good sides).
