The Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center is my favorite place in Baltimore.  I have been there with kids ages 4 to 40, and all have had a good time.

Start by exploring weather, climate, and the world.  Witness a miniature tornado or shape sand dunes by controlling the wind.  See if you can catch a blue crab on camera.  Then mosey on back to dig for dinosaurs, assemble a skeleton, learn from one ...

The National Aquarium - My Guide

You can certainly find more information and better reviews of the National Aquarium on their website (http://www.aqua.org/) or any number of Baltimore tourism pages, so what I have to offer here are my personal highlights and suggestions for maximizing your aquarium visit.

1) Take your time!  There is a lot to see, but you will miss many hidden gems and quirky fish behaviors if you barrel through.  Read ...

Uncle Wiggly's

I stumbled upon Uncle Wiggly's one fall afternoon driving North on York Road to Towson.  I wanted to grab a quick lunch and decided to try this quaint deli with a jovial looking chef on the sign.  I was not disappointed.

Uncle Wiggly's offers a large menu of sandwiches like The Raven and the Wiggletoni for folks to like to have their flavor combinations decided for them.  You can also design ...

Elvis brings real Latin food to Federal Hill

Elvis restaurant

To me, authentic Mexican food means what I ate with my fellow workers when I worked construction in D.C. They’d find little corner shops where potent soups of reddish orange or green bubbled, where strange colas filled the coolers and where no one spoke English.

Maybe mole sauces and enchiladas are authentic too. I’m not interested in debating what authentic means. Besides, the food I remember is pan-Latin, or most likely, knowing the makeup of ethnicities in D.C., central American. “Mexican” is a word Americans have long used to brand the sum of all of Latin America’s foods. So debate doesn’t have much of a point. But what does...

Baltimore Summer Festivals

If you're like me, summer time means festival season.  Here are some highlights of several festivals for this summer.

Baltimore Pride: June 16, 17.  Saturday on the streets of Mt Vernon for a parade and Sunday in Druid Hill Park for food, live music, picnics, and more.   Drag queen shows, queen of pride competetion, live performances, so much fun. I have been the past 3 years and have loved every ...

Baltimore Farmers' Market

The Baltimore Farmer's Market ...think street festival with vegetables.

The Market, located underneath the Jones Falls Expressway, at Holiday and Saratoga Streets (near City Hall) opened for the season, and was in full bloom Sunday.  It has what you'd expect at a farmers' market- lots of vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants, mushrooms, flowers and farm related products like honey,  smoked meats and sausages. There was a great buy on cheese from Hawks ...

Rub

South of the SOBO skanks and pushers, at the very tip of Federal Hill in what should probably be called Port Covington, lies Rub.

Rub has cream soda on tap. It’s delicious! I could possibly place my face under that cream soda tap and drink for hours, although drinking it from the giant mason jar they serve non-acoholic beverages in is fun too. They also have their own beers ...

Ixia

Ixia deserves a slightly hipper language than English. Something with more words for swank or bizarre is required, because in English it’s hard to describe how the blue walls and crystal chandeliers and paintings of dancing skeletons translate into something stylish but without the self-importance of the style-dives of Manhattan.

My date and I debated the cocktail menu until the bartenders could stand it no longer. They asked if ...

Beadazzled

I was drawn to Beadazzled by the intriguing statuary and decor in the windows, but was delighted to find more than I bargained for within.  Three giant island tables of glass and plastic beads dominate the interior of the store.  One wall is lined with smaller strings and containers of beads, while one wall houses more expensive and unique beads and stones.  If crafts appeal to you, you can quickly ...

The "Original" Washington Monument

Baltimore's Washington Monument was erected between 1815 and 1829, some 20 years before construction began on the Washington Monument in D.C.  Baltimoreans contest that this monument is the true Washington Monument, and turn their noses at the landmark of the National Mall. Whatever your opinion, this Mount Vernon attraction is certainly worth a second look.

Baltimore

The Washngton Monument is 178 feet high.  If you ...
