The Admiral's Cup
The Admiral’s Cup holds one of the best locations in Fells Point, right on the corner where Broadway smacks into the water. It also has this weird box-like wood contraption at the foot of the bar. See, in the place of a rail, which most bars have at the bottom of the front of the bar, the bar at the Admiral’s Cup has a six inch piece of wood, creating a six inch deep box at the foot of the bar. My buddy surmised that once upon a time (hopefully not any more) the Admiral’s Cup may have been the kind of bar where you could urinate while drinking. This box, he guessed, had some sort of drain at one end or the other.
I find the whole concept of combining my urinal and my bar stool fairly repulsive. The thought did bring to mind, however, images of what The Admiral’s Cup probably used to be, a dive packed with rowdy and well liquored sailors. It feels as if most of the woodwork has been around since the days of sails, and also that some of it hasn’t been cleaned since either.
I’m not sure I’d recommend the food, service, or general ambiance. I’m not going to recommend against it, but B-more has plenty of great food, so why settle? Especially when I can think of two or three great spots within half a block of the Cup. Now what the Cup does do that nobody else can is sport a bunch of cafe tables set on the concrete pier right outside. Anywhere you can sit in the sun and watch the water lap against the pilings and drink a beer? That’s a cools spot.
