Fort Charles is the King of Dives
If you’re uncomfortable in Fort Charles it’s because you brought it in with you, or perhaps because you don’t like cigarette smoke. I visit Fort Charles on weekdays for lunch and occasionally for a beer before work (I’m a bartender, I’m allowed to go to work with one beer down). I can’t say what the DJ’s play on Friday and Saturday, but the music is recycled classic rock during the week and the place rarely has more than a few people in it.
The food is excellent. I swear. Fort Charles only does burgers, potato salad, chicken sandwiches, and such, but they do them all well. The bartenders at Fort Charles are friendly too, which I appreciate, and you can tell they know more about what happens in South Baltimore than anyone on the city payroll.
Fort Charles has pool tables and always sports a few Harleys parked on the sidewalk outside over the weekend. It’s the kind of place that welcomes the weekday drinker, the Harley rider, the tired construction worker, and if you don’t mind the smoke, anyone else as well. If you want to taste South Baltimore, go to Fort Charles.
Hours are 10am - 2am daily, kitchen 11am-9pm.
