North Chicago Bars

Looking for a great place to catch a live musical act while you're in Chicago? Look no further. There are two great bars on Chicago's north side shilling out original live music daily.

Schuba's, located at School and Southport in West Lakeview, is a bar, restaurant, and a cozy musical venue. They have a different live act every night of the week. Check out the ...

House of Blues and the Foundation Room Offer Music, Art and Style

I don't actually spend a lot of time at the House of Blues--every year or so they have a show I'd like to see, and at one point my husband and I contemplated becoming members of the Foundation Room. I find the groups that play there to be eclectic and mostly interesting for nostalgia reasons. The last show I saw there was Asia, with the original lineup (I know, don't ...

Celebrity Sightings at Gen Art Chicago (independent) Film Festival, June 26-30

All this week, the Gen Art Chicago Film Festival will bring to Chicago a series of independent films - and some of their stars, too.

If you're in it for the celebrity elbow-rubbing, come see Heather Graham on Tuesday, June 26; Alan Cumming on Friday, June 29, or a number of other actors and filmmakers during the festival.

If you're in it for the films, you can catch Broken, a film about a haunted L.A. waitress; ...

Bowling at the Seven Ten Lounge

No doubt you've noticed that Chicago is filled with trendy bowling spots downtown.  If you're looking for something a little more vintage, you should check out the Seven Ten Lounge in Lincoln Park.

At the Seven Ten Lounge, you keep score by hand at one of the eight lanes available.  The ball return is vintage AMF.  The atmosphere is laid back and there are no black lights or cosmic bowling.  I ...

Old Town Charm on Wells Street

Find yourself in Chicago in nice weather with a few hours to spare?  Take a walk!

In the Old Town neighborhood, tree-lined streets, boutique shops, and one-of-a-kind restaurants wait for you.  Take the Brown Line to the Sedgwick stop.  Then, take North Avenue east to Wells St.  On your way, you will pass Fleet Feet sports, a huge running store for the serious (and not-so-serious) runner.  If you're in the market for running shoes, stop in, and ...

Liter Beers and Polka in Wrigleyville

Uberstein Beers

There is a little bit of Munich right here in hicago.  At Uberstein Chicago, the beer comes by the liter, the music is live polka, and the sausage of choice is the bratwurst.  The bartenders at Uberstein are pretty friendly, but don't expect lederhosen.  Occasionally, one of the brewers will send out a "marketing team" disguised as ...

Tokyo 21

Tokyo 21 Sushi Bar and Nightclub offers a wide variety of food and drinks at an affordable price. The menu includes specialty sushi dishes, maki, and rolls as well as courses for those not quite brave enough to venture into the world of raw fish. This came in helpful being a beginning sushi eater myself. The menu was actually a little different than the one posted online at http://www.tokyo21chicago.com/tokyo.html

I started ...

Neighborhood Blues Venue

When visitors to Chicago ask me "what is a good blues club?" I take a moment to find out what their intent is.  If they want to go to a nice bar, hear some good music, and be able to return home knowing that they heard some Chicago blues, I send them to Kingston Mines or B.L.U.E.S. on North Halsted.

But if they want to hear real Chicago blues in an authentic ...
