Six Flags Great America Is Fun for the Whole Family

Located in Gurnee, Illinois, Six Flags is a 45-minute drive (more if there's traffic) from downtown Chicago. But, if you enjoy the amusement park experience, it's great fun for everyone. It has some serious roller coasters, along with a huge waterpark, games and lots of other exciting rides. Though its costumed characters, many from the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes library, are a bit dated, they've just introduced a section for ...

Chicagology 101: #36 - May 24, 2007. The National Restaurant Association’s Yearly Convention in Chicago left no Pan, Plate or Platter unturned.

Part I: No longer the ABC’s, the PDT’s have arrived.

There are three different ways FOOD can be prepared. Those are either Hot, Cold or somewhere in between. After that point, depending on one’s particular tastes, it can be rated. The same holds true of Conventions. Preparation, Degrees and Tastes are what it is all about. Add (the) Pop Culture Element(s) and some High Technology Flash and the Floor will be ...

Stingray Bay Opens Monday at Brookfield Zoo

On Memorial Day Brookfield Zoo opens its brand new exhibit, Stingray Bay. This touch experience will allow visitors to get up close and personal with two kinds of rays-southern stingrays and cownose rays. And, at random intervals during each day, visitors will be offered the chance to buy a mixture of smelt and shrimp to feed the animals (for $1). Stingray Bay on the zoo's East Mall will be open ...

Natural Beauty Awaits At The Chicago Botanic Garden

This week I got my membership to the Chicago Botanic Garden, located in the northern suburb of Glencoe. It's beautiful there, so if you're looking a lush, green respite from city life it's a perfect place to visit.

The Botanic Garden is huge: 385 acres of display gardens, lakes, woods and prairies, with 2.3 million living plants. It's a teaching garden, where thousands of people enroll (at the Joseph Regenstein, Jr. ...

New Sears Centre Features Sports and Music

I’ve seen two different events at the new Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates now, so here’s the scoop on this sports/concert venue. This venue, which is sited close to the location of the old outdoor Poplar Creek Music Theater, can hold up to 11,800 (for concerts). It’s located about 45 minutes from downtown if the traffic’s light. We attended the first-ever concert here, which featured Duran Duran, and the place ...

Best view: Hancock vs. the Sears Tower

About ten years ago, I had a temp job that was on something like 100th floor of the Sears Tower. Through circumstances I can't remember now, I ended up using the corner office to do my data entry. This office faced the west side, with a great view of the United Center. The sunsets were spectacular. One of the things I realized is how many churches ...

Get Some Dim Sum At Three Happiness

Chicago's Chinatown isn't large, compared to the Chinatowns in San Francisco or New York, but it has a flavor all its own. And when my extended family comes to town, it's practically traditional for us to have dim sum at Three Happiness.

If you like the dim sum experience--getting your  food from little plates straight off the metal carts as they wheel around the room--then this place is perfect: it's casual ...
