Tokyo 21
Tokyo 21 Sushi Bar and Nightclub offers a wide variety of food and drinks at an affordable price. The menu includes specialty sushi dishes, maki, and rolls as well as courses for those not quite brave enough to venture into the world of raw fish. This came in helpful being a beginning sushi eater myself. The menu was actually a little different than the one posted online at http://www.tokyo21chicago.com/tokyo.html
I started with the Tempura Shrimp, easy and simple. I liked it and felt brave, so I ordered the Rainbow Maki. Seemed I had skipped a few steps as I was not ready for this. The rice and the asparagus and cream cheese on the inside was excellent, it was the raw tuna draped over it I had a hard time swallowing. I moved on to the unique tasting Mango Lobster Roll. I was glad to have tried al f these, but was still not full as I could not eat more than one or two, so I ordered the Kalbe Maki. Warm and delicious, this was the safe way out; it was a piece of Kobe Beef wrapped around an asparagus spear and a scallion.
If I had to sum up the atmosphere in one word, it would be fun. All of the guests seemed to be having a great time as was the staff. After dinner, we had a drink at the bar which was lit up by florescent red and blue alternating lights around a big screen TV. The drink menu included a long list of saki and many other creative drinks.
Tokyo 21 is an excellent place for any sushi lover or anyone on their way to becoming one. I was glad to have made this my first sushi experience. Our waiter could not have been more friendly or more helpful.
