Chicagology 101: #35. When East Meets West In Chicago at ARTropolis 2007™: Chicagology 101 was there for The Live Coverage & Festivities.
THROUGH THE CREATIVE EYES OF…
ASK: Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith
‘America’s Premier Eventologist’
& A Prominent Chicago Resident since 1974…
PART 1: The Color of Art Explained.
ARTropolis graced Chicago from April 26-30. The Show is now officially closed but it opened new Avenues of Artistry for Collectors, Aficionados, Fans and The Media in an entirely new Light. Gallery Owners (from over 37 global locales) packed up their ‘Best of Shows’ and traveled tens of thousands of miles to appear in ‘My Kind of Town,’ Chicago. Attendees commuted in similarly as long distances to be part of this Historical Event.
Sleep was put on hold. The Excitement built day-after-day. For days on end, Chicago (as the Grand Lady she is) entertained legions of people all possessing divergent preferences. Local restaurants, hotels, art galleries, dance halls, movie theatres, stage plays, boat rides, guided tours, etc. put out their Hospitality Mat.
Where does one even begin to report about all the Festivities and Activities that occurred and those that will continue to incur well through 2007 and into the future (until the next ARTropolis begins)? This again is another justification for Cloning. Now that the 5 congruent Shows have successfully closed, another Segment begins. Due to the Time, Situation and Precision taken with these Exhibitions, History (as never before) was cemented into the Annals of The Arts, with Ingenuity, stroke by stroke.
CONNECTING THE DOTS: With a firm Networking System in place now, the astute Person(ality) can now begin to ‘connect the dots’ (literally and figuratively) to make Great Strides for his/her career by cultivating, developing and enhancing The Arts.
WHEN EAST MEETS WEST IN CHICAGO ™: This was due (in part) due to:
- Gallery Owners introducing and representing their Roster @ ARTropolis.
- Artists met Gallery Owners.
- Gallery Owners met new Artists.
- Gallery Owners met Collectors.
- New Trends were unveiled.
- New Concepts were revealed.
- The Media got the express Opportunity first-hand (and first class) to see and report what was happening behind the Doors of so many Creative Studios and Galleries they did not get to visit until now.
- School Children (many Budding Artists in their own right) got to tour ARTropolis on Monday – FREE DAY – with their Teachers in order to see these Artworks and become inspired.
- Ordinary People received an ExtraOrdinary Experience.
TO BE HONEST: In a nutshell, you had to be there to appreciate the entirety and scope of the 5 Day 5-Show Event. Here, all Facets of The Arts converged to create the most profound Cultural Show Chicago has yet to put on in its 170 year history.
CAMELOT RETURNS TO CHICAGO: April 26-30:
Thanks to his Vision, Insights and Love of The Arts, Mr. Christopher G. Kennedy (President of the Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.) charged up his Staff that made sure every inch, every nuance, every window sill, from floor to ceiling and all spaces between to every light bulb was securely in place and dazzling.
BACKED BY POPULAR DEMAND: With this set-up, this International Display was a Showroom to be emulated by other Cities wishing to remain in the ‘Art Race.’ All conveniently located within the Merchandise Mart Properties, most Attendees wish The Show could have remained ‘as is.’
The Problem with ART is that it is a very selective phenomenon. Everyone has their own Likes and Dislikes. Even Identical Twins do not like the same Art. Being discriminatory is what automatically takes place when entering an Art Gallery as it does a Clothing Store. We either like something or don’t. If We like enough of special Item, we become a Collector and/or Expert. Withstanding this vital point, describing Art can be a ‘Real Turnoff.’ Others feel it is boring to read about Art when they can be viewing it themselves and making their own valued Judgments.
THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS: Why read about Art when you can physically see and (sometimes touch it) in a museum, gallery, library, a restaurant-type setting or even painted randomly on a viaduct wall?
ARTropolis provided deluxe Opportunities all under one expansive, two-block roof to thousands of Attendees every day. It was not to be missed. Mark your Calendar for ARTropolis II for 2008.
THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS: How’d they do that? Even Ty Pennington of ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover would be puzzled by these logistics. This was back-breaking work, comprised of set-up; tear down; packing and unpacking as well as the Guides and Guards who stood and directed traffic for hours on end. As it all came together, it was just as easy to take it apart so that the Exhibitors had no great problems returning home with Memories and Sales in far excess of what they even (or ever) dreamed.
With Exhibits ranging from Contemporary to Antique to Primitive to Electronic Arts, there was something for everyone no matter how selective their Tastes were. By the same token, there was ample NEW ART in order to intrigue ‘The People’ so that innovative Concepts were introduced, thus enhancing their Portfolio of ‘Artists on The Move.’
As Readers know, Chicagology 101 ®, the bi-weekly Blog, is slanted towards the Lifestyles and Pop Culture that Chicago is. During ARTropolis as I covered this Slant, I primarily focused on The Art of Art, its Personalities, Events and Topics of every Genre that colors our Days.
WHEN BIAS IS BEST: Because Chicago was the sponsoring City for this Global Event, Prejudice instantly set in as I strolled about the floors and rooms selecting:
THE TOP TEN ARTISTS
THE TOP TEN ART WORKS
THE TOP TEN ART GALLERIES
THE TOP TEN ART VOICES
THE TOP TEN ART MOVEMENTS &
THE TOP TEN ART PUBLICATIONS
to be featured in future Chicagology 101 Blogs. In a City where Art reigns as greatly as it does, although there were many Contenders and Competition, this was not hard to do. Cream rises to The Top. To rephrase that:
Cream rises to THE TOP TEN.
What follows is THE TOP TEN of many Artists, Galleries and Personalities that are well-worth checking into. Pertinent Info is provided so you can visit them. It is up to you to call or email them for their hours, upcoming Receptions or to set an Appointment. The Weather is finally warm. There’s no acceptable Excuses. Mother’s Day is in a few days. Perhaps Mother would like a new Painting or Sculpture. The Ambiance will be different than that experienced during ARTropolis, but still, give yourself some time to explore these TOP TENs. They didn’t get there by any Godmother Magic Wand.
I definitely do not want to dissuade you by saying I prefer one Artist, Gallery or Personality over another. Consider this your stART-up Kit ® when you visit Chicago and want to see ‘Real Talent.’
From this Point on, there will be an ART Section in Chicagology 101 derived from all the Notes, Conversations, Interviews and Photographs I gathered from this colossal Event. To kick-off your AEAS: Art Education Adrienne Style, We will start with:

PART 3: Compatistrology ®.
“Where Compatibility + Astrology meet The Internet for your Benefit.”
For variety, it’s important to get out and attend Events. ARTropolis afforded People (especially Singles) a real chance to see exceptional Works of Art from across the World, while perhaps even getting the Opportunity to find a new Mate-to-Date. Plenty of Hollywood Flicks have revolved around this Theme of a Woman browsing in an Art Gallery and she encounters a Man who becomes the ‘Man of her Dreams.’ The rest of that scenario is what made Hollywood ‘Hollywood.’ When it comes to Art as it does to a devout Dog Owner, the Theme ‘Love me, Love my Art or Dog’ takes full stage.
Therefore, for those Individuals born on Tuesday, May 1, the Personalities they are most compatible with are born on:
January 13, March 9, June 16, August 7, October 10 and November 4
There is no need to be sad and suffering when an uncomplicated Jaunt to an Event (away from the homestead) can yield Great Treasures, not only for your Walls but for your Heart as well.

PART 6: Earth Year Tips
Making Healthy Earth Habits a 24/7 Constant
The 3 brief Tips for Tuesday, May 1, 2007 are:
1. To reduce waste and save hard-earned money, convert a beat-up old cotton shirt into a rag.
2. While brushing your teeth, turn the faucet off. This small Random Act of Conservation saves 9 Gallons of Water! That equates to 9,855 Gallons of Water annually (for those who brush 3 times a day; 6,570 Gallons for those who brush (only) twice-a-day.
3. Avoid running Dryers, Electric Ovens and Washers, (or any large Appliances) during the Peak Energy Demand Hours of 5AM - 9 AM and 4 PM - 7 PM.
UPON CLOSING: Until Friday…May all your Adventures & Trips be healthy, happy and ART-iculate ones!
Sincerely,
Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith
