University of Hawaii Planning 100 Acre Campus in Kapolei

A land developer contracted by the University of Hawaii has purchased a 298 acre site in Kapolei. 100 acres is reserved for a campus, and the remaining space will be used for commercial and residential projects to create a little college town.

The City and County of Honolulu has been focusing a lot of new development in Kapolei and the surrounding areas, which is currently mostly farmland. The southwestern tip of Oahu is flat and relatively undeveloped compared to most other areas on the island. There will still be vast areas of natural habitat, simply because most of the island is mountainous, making development or farming difficult.

It was also recently announced that the first Target discount store in Hawaii will be built in Kapolei. This is great news for exported mainlanders like me who miss the brand. I feel a little reserved about all of the development though. A college town would complement the current vibe of Kapolei, but I wonder if all of the development might impact the slower pace of life here that is so cherished.

I agree, a college would be great but more development of stores and such would eventually drive the people away or not return...people are trying to get away from the rat race...not come to another one!
