Makapu‘u lookout-Ka Iwi Scenic Wilderness area

Windward Coast

This is a 1-mile hike (one-way) along the former roadway to the
Coast Guard Lighthouse Station. At various points, there are
sweeping views of the both southeastern O'ahu coastline - whales
may be visible during winter months - and the Windward coast of
Oahu. Watch for hang gliders floating on the updrafts created by the
cliffs. They can stay up all day when the trade winds are brisk.

The road climbs to 500-foot elevation under hot, dry, and windy
conditions. No drinking water or restrooms are available. Be sure to
take water. Sun protection is recommended. Climbing to the summit
will take about an hour. Less for a good hiker, but take your time and
enjoy the views. Coming down will probably take half as long. Early
morning is the best time to hike. It is cooler and the sun rising over
the ocean is spectacular. The park opens at 7am and closes at
dusk.

In developing the park the most important consideration was
resource protection, particularly for Makapu'u Head which for the
Hawaiian people is an ancient site for the cultivation of healing
herbs. The Hawaiian Nation (Ohana Council) proposes establishing
a "Healing Center" in this area to provide among other services,
counseling and activities for youths; revival of ancient Hawaiian
healing traditions; and to provide an educational facility for Visitors
about Hawaiian traditions and lore. These interpretive features of the
park await future funding.

Location: Off Kalaniana'ole Highway (Hwy. 72) from either
Waimanalo or Hawai'i Kai. This is at the summit of the pass between
Hawai`i Kai and Waimanalo

Hours: Daily During Daylight Hours
