Honolulu's Local Fusion Cuisine
Nestled in the heart of downtown Honolulu Indigos Restaurant is an oasis of tropical ambiance, mouth-watering fusion cuisine, and one of the best happy hours in the islands.
The dimly lit red brick hallway at the entrance does little to prepare patrons for the Zen-like atmosphere within. The hovering white paper lanterns overhead add a warm glow to the dark wood furniture with Indonesian accents. In the Opium Den, the corner bar to the far right, the atmosphere is tranquil with white candles on the table's, soft blue-green lighting, and if you're with a gaggle of friends be sure to find a spot on the large punee in the corner.
Indigos offers a wide range of live music, DJs usually opt for the intimate Opium Den & Champagne Bar while bands will often set up in the Green Room. This room has a full-bar, high, slender tables, and a long mirror perfect for eyeing beautiful Honoluluians without being too obvious. The music flows every night with no cover, except for Friday and Saturday when its $10 after 10 p.m.
If the Green Room is too cramped, you can grab a Lychee or Sake martin from the Garden Bar, Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. the entire martin menu is priced at $2.75. The Garden is also a perfect stop for Honolulu Theater goers as the back entrance is five steps away from the box office. So before or after your show, be sure to stop in and have a drink under an Indochina umbrella.
If you're hungry and thirsty Indigos chef and owner Glenn Chu offers excellent food and wine parings, the servers are extremely knowledgeable, and if you're a true wine guru you can usually find the wine steward, Jason Castle, better known as "Cass."
The Goat Cheese Won Tons with Four Fruit Sauce are a favorite starter along with the Nalo Farms Mesclun salad. Moving on to the main course you can never go wrong with the nightly Fresh Fish Special or Cates Ocean Raised Moi Roasted in Banana Leaf. Moi is harvested several hours earlier from deep-water cages off the Waianae Coast. Due to supply and demand, this fish is only available at a select number of local restaurants. For dessert, heaven is the Double Double Chocolate Torte. Its mousse filling and dark chocolate crust will melt in your mouth.
So while the background noise of the Garden Bar fountains relax you and the smooth jazz of the Green Room excites you, toast your glass of Trifecta and say A-L-O-H-A!
