How's It in Honolulu

Welcome to How's It in Honolulu.  This blog is designed to give the traveler ideas and info about activities and places of interest in and around Honolulu.  On the island of Oahu, Honolulu sees over 20 million passengers (according to the Hawaii, Department of Transportation 2005 report).   With that many travelers, you can bet Honolulu is "choke" with activities for anyone to enjoy.

How's It in Honolulu blogging will:

  • Keep you up to date with current events
  • Provide travel tips (what to pack, what not to pack)
  • Provide word of the day (the local lingo is steeped in Hawaiian culture)
  • Top lists (where to eat, where to people-watch, where to swim, where to go.  Yes, I get to tell you where to go)

Word of the day:  Aloha

I know everyone knows this term, but few know the real meaning.  It's more than hello and goodbye.  The genuine meaning is unconditional love.  When you say Aloha, you're wishing that person love.

When you do arrive in Honolulu are you curious about what to do other than lazing around on the beach?  While I personally could do that for hours, I'd be challenged to make it an everyday occurrence, what with UV rays and all.  There's probably not enough SPF in the world for this haoli girl.  So what should/could/would you do?

Here's a list of the top 5 things to do when in Honolulu.  Return to this Honolulu blog, which will provide more detailed information and links to other sites on each of these activities, but here's a start:

  1. Relax on the beach and people watch.  Isn't that what vacation is for?  Just relax and soak in the sun.  There are miles of beaches in the Waikiki area alone.  Pack up a towel (most hotels will offer one), sunscreen (you're pretty close to the equator), and a beverage.  You'll be set for the day.
  2. Shop.  Simply put, the Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki is choke full of shopping options.  From the upscale labels like Gucci, Hermes, or Channel to the International Marketplace loaded with local/cultural crafts.  You can spend as little or as much as your heart (and your wallet) desire at shopping centers like the DFS Galleria for shopping brand boutiques, sunglasses, or cosmetics to name a few highlights.  (You might want to leave the guys on their own manly pursuit for the day.)
  3. Take a tour.  I'm not into those pre-fab tours because I like my independence.  I found this tour product as a compromise between the guided tour and aimless wondering through town.  Tourtalk Hawaii.  Did you know that Hawaii was a monarchy long before it became the 50th state?  It has a unique and rich history.
  4. Take a hike.  Seriously, take a hike.  The options are numerous and includes hiking the beach to hiking Diamond Head (volcano crater) to hiking to the Manoa Falls.  Go to this website Hawaii hiking for dozens of hiking options.
  5. Dining out.  Well you gotta grind, right?  The immediate Waikiki area provides every type of dining experience you can think of.  From white table-cloth hoity-toity to the local lunch plate.  I have my fav-raves and will highlight them for you, but in the meantime, check out this list at Restauranteur for a list of over 50 dining out options in Waikiki alone.

Keep visiting How's It in Honolulu blogging for first-hand knowledge about what to do, where to go, what to eat and what's happening in Honolulu (and the other great places on Oahu.)  Feel free to write if you have any questions or need a recommendation.

Aloha!
