Chinatown's Green Door Cafe - An Eating Experience

Downtown Chinatown boasts a variety of eateries. Popular places such as Little Village and Mini Garden provide a wide variety of Asian choices specifically altered to match the Caucasian taste buds. Pricey and often times overcrowded, The Green Door Café proves to be an excellent alternative.

The Green Door Café is located between Maunakea and Pauahi Street. It is towards the end of Chinatown and near the canal. Painted in lime green with distinct red lanterns hung at the entrance, this cafe may seem unwelcoming at first glance. Furnished with only 4 tables and a few metal stools, this cafe is modest yet interesting. The green theme carries throughout the little establishment and the walls are decked with colorful and immature paintings and Asian artifacts. The menu is listed on a simple white board and the variety may not be extravagant. However, the limited dishes are simply to die for if you're an ardent food fan.

The owner, Ms. Betty, is born and raised in both Singapore and Malaysia. She proudly proclaims that this cafe is the first and only authentic Nonya Malaysian and Singaporean kitchen in Honolulu. The authenticity of the food is highly questionable as they are not the normal dishes sampled in these countries. As a local Singaporean, I was sorely disappointed at the exclamation but the food served is definitely appetizing and too good to even dispute over labels. To top it all off, the dishes are priced affordably and is reasonable even for the regular college student. I was undeniably impressed with the food. Singaporean or not, it was a succulent treat and a formidable recommendation to all.

While you're at the Green Door café, make it a must to try their special Nonya Pork Tenderloin. This dish comprises of slices of pork seasoned in a special sauce with makes it both juicy and a little crispy at the very same time. Layered on top of pieces of vegetables such as sliced tomatoes and lettuce, the contrast between the flavors makes this dish a must have!!

Another dish worth trying would be the Malaysian Chicken or Shrimp Curry. This is probably the most authentic Malaysian food on the menu. The curry is aromatic and the is a nice blend of spice and flavor. Mixed with onions, this dish would complement their pieces of homemade Roti Canai (Roti Prata). Dip the Roti Canai into the curry for that delicious food experience. A simple plate of curry and two pieces of Roti Canai would be adequate for the light eater and would not cost more that $15.00.

The food portions are relatively large for the normal Asian diner. Three dishes and two bowls of rice would prove sufficient for your meal and for take out as well if you're only dining for two.

Do note that the owner takes great pride in her ability to make her dishes the spiciest meal you will ever taste. If you are not a fan of spicy food, make sure that you notify her while you are placing your order. On the contrary, if you really want to test your taste buds, let her know that you would like it spicy. Ms. Betty would definitely zest and season it up for you.

The Green Door Café is open from Tuesdays to Sundays at 11 to 3pm and again at 5.30 to 8pm. Don't be alarmed if the door is closed when you visit during operational hours, simply give it a little tap and Ms. Betty would be there to welcome you.

For more information or for take out orders, the number for the Green Door is (8 8) 533-0606.

The Green Door Café is truly a hidden gem in the midst of Chinatown. Take the time to explore and find this eatery, you will not be sorely disappointed.
