Scenic Drive Around Oahu, Part 2
January 25, 2007
Aloha,
Well, I left off the other day driving around Oahu and getting over the hill to witness a spectacular view of the North Shore and it's awesome waves during the winter season.
Anway, after I continued my drive down the hill towards Haleiwa town, I enjoyed the fresh country breeze as well as seeing the rustic, down home ambiance of this area. No high rises, no traffic so to speak, and no plumes of smoke permeating the air.
The drive into Haleiwa was nice, as I got to see rows of mom and pop stores as well as new development (low rise). Of course, no journey through this town is quite complete without stopping by for shaved ice along the way.
Shaved ice is a scoop of fine, crushed ice placed atop a paper cone. All flavors of syrup can be sprinkled on the ice as topping.
A few people, like me, eat shaved ice without any flavor. In other words, just the ice in a cone. I know, you're probably thinking that I get puzzled gazes from people.
I do, but who cares? I also don't eat seafood, even the popular local staples such as poke (raw sashimi), lomi lomi salmon, taco (squid) and so forth.
I actually love comfort food such as chili as well as Italian and Mexican food. Getting back to the drive.
Once I passed through Haleiwa, I continued my trek on pass several of the famous North Shore breaks leading to Sunset Beach and beyond --- Laniakea, Chun's Reef, Waimea Bay, Rocky Point, and so forth.
I used to boogie board at these surf spots. Once past Sunset Beach and Pupukea, I rounded the bend and headed towards the Turtle Bay Resort --- the only resort on the North Shore. Beautiful resort. More later on this resort. I've got to go now.
Mahalo,
Keoki
