What to do in Savannah
You've caught glimpses of her in movies, read about her in books and magazines, and been encouraged by television shows to see her beauty for yourself, but you are wondering what you should actually DO when you come to Savannah. I am glad you asked!
As a resident of the historic area, let me share with you what I think you need to do to make your visit with us one you will long remember.
Take an actual tour: Yes, you can walk around on your own and need to do so (discussed below), but first you need to actually get a decent overview of the historic district so you can focus on the areas you really want to get to know. There are driving tours, horse-drawn buggy tours, and even walking tours. Pick one, you can't go wrong, and take it your first day, hopefully the first morning you are here.
Visit one of the historic homes open for tours: It is one thing to see them from the outside, but visiting the inside is worth every penny. Take your time. As you peruse the house, its furnishings and its gardens, imagine what it must have been like to live there, entertain there, and maybe most importantly what it might have been like (the good and the bad) to be a part of the gentile class that inhabited such a structure.
Spend a morning or afternoon shopping: Savannah is nothing if not eclectic in her tastes. There are very distinctive shopping areas in here with a wide range of offerings, plan a morning or an afternoon in one or two of them. Home to the largest art college in the US (Savannah College of Art and Design-SCAD), there are galleries on nearly every corner. The home furnishings and accessories here are the best in the southeast.
Walk around, sit around, and take it all in: Savannah is the largest historic district in the US; you need to walk around and enjoy it. The unique design of the city-the grid pattern of streets punctuated with charming small green parks called squares-allows you to walk, sit, and enjoy like few other cities I know. Stroll for a while, slide into a nice place to eat, walk some more, cool off in a quaint watering hole, and then head back to the hotel to rest up before dinner.
Eat, drink, and be merry: There are any number of great dinning options here, from the extremely modestly priced (we are a college town you know) to the extremely extravagant. Also, you might have heard Savannah has a liberal open-container law. You can walk the streets with your drink as long as you meet certain restrictions (size, type container, public behavior). In addition, Savannah has a very lively and robust music and club scene. You can find exceptional live music opportunities almost every night of the week.
Combined, these activities add up to a city where you can really relax and enjoy your vacation. So park your car, put on your favorite walking shoes and immerse yourself in all that Savannah has to offer.
