Experience the Pura Vida

The purpose of Chef Hector Santiago's award-winning is quite simple: to enjoy life, to enjoy friends, and to enjoy food. And the design of Pura Vida's restaurant and menu make for a wonderful experience. Here, courses come out in light progression on small plates that encourage sharing, unless, of course, if you're like me and know your favorites, in which case you're more likely to warn others in your party that, if they want to try your food, they'll have to order their own.
The food has a distinctive flare that goes beyond the average. Simple dishes, such as empanadas, are given new life with little more than a tangy vinegar-based sauce, while "la media noche," their answer to the cuban sandwich, plays with the traditional flavors without losing its roots. And, oh, the mohitos! Best I've had in Atlanta so far. And I've had many.
Aside from terrific food, Pura Vida offers periodic events to keep the place lively. Expect DJ Sergio on Fridays after ten, spinning Latin American music into the night. There are tango dancers twice a month, on Thursdays. Once a month, there's a "gallery night" featuring up-and-coming artists, with tapas and wine tastings for ten dollars a person. And Monday is dedicated to the mojito, with discounts on the drink to enjoy while playing dominos.
Located just off of Ponce de Leon in the Virginia Highlands, it's relatively easy to find. The exterior is not flashy, but the interior more than makes up for it. Catch it while it's stilll a sort-of-hidden treasure. Easily one of the best restaurants in Atlanta, viva Pura Vida.
