Like Lizards?

This morning in my laundry room, I found evidence that my home has had a scaly and legless visitor sometime in the recent past.

I looked around online to find out who to call to find out what sort of snake it was, and found The Suncoast Herpetological Society.

As it happens, they meet on the third Wednesday of every month at The Moccasin Lake Nature Park in Clearwater, Florida. Meetings are free and open to the public. This seems like a great, free activity for the kids.

The Moccasin Lake Nature Center is worth a visit all on its own. The park is home to several animals who, for various reasons, cannot be released back into the wild. Residents include turtles, hawks, owls, a bald eagle, and, I kid you not, the sweetest, most attention-hungry vulture you will ever encounter. The bird is always very interested in visitors, and will follow you from one end of its habitat to the other. According to park information, it was raised as a pet while young, and has imprinted on humans.

The Nature Center also has two nature trails with boardwalks through pretty woods down to the lake, natural gas powered grills for barbecues, and offers guided tours, including night hikes.
