First Disc Golf Course in Area at Limona Park

Limona now has its own set of links; in fact, the first set in Hillsborough County.

A nine-hole disc golf course in Limona Park, 1316 Lakewood Drive.

Though on county-owned land, the course was the idea of John and Jennifer McCray of Brandon. Both started playing disc golf in 1995. Shortly thereafter, John went pro and plays the Florida circuit. He's ranked among the Top 10 in the world among men in the sport.

The McCrays approached the county and asked to have a course to play the little-known sport.

"We always traveled elsewhere to play disc golf," said Jennifer McCray.

Officials at the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department were intrigued by the idea.

"We didn't have a disc golf course in the system and we thought it was important to us," said John Brill, spokesman for the parks system. "It was something we did not offer. It's quality recreation, though it is a little out of the mainstream."

Brill said Limona Park was the ideal location due to the park's slight rolling hills, the trees and shade and the overall physical appeal of the property.

John McCray designed the course.

Now a permanent feature of the park, with tee areas, fairways and holes, the course is a par 27. Two of the holes can be considered par 4s for less experienced players, McCray said.

Disc golf works on the same principle as regular golf except there are no clubs and balls, only discs that are thrown down the fairway to a netted hole. The less throws, the better the score.

The discs resemble Frisbees (which they are never called by serious players) with one for teeing off, fairway play and putting. Discs are changed depending on where it lies.
