Tampa’s Premiere Accessory: Centro Ybor

One of Tampa’s hottest night spots --- known for cigars, booze and family-friendly fare --- among other things, Ybor City is one of the most historic and eclectic districts in the city.

But that’s not what this area of the city is known for.

A stone’s throw from downtown, and a hop and skip from Tampa Bay, Ybor is host to Tampa’s “red-light district”, filled with nightclubs and bars, making for an ...

Raging bull

No bull about it, The University of South Florida is getting a real, live mascot.

Appropriately, it’s a Brahman bull, named Rocky.

Though no concrete plans for more growth exist, officials from the mall are keeping their eyes on the future as they look for more ways to keep the shopping center growing, county officials acknowledged last week.

Talks, initiated by Brandon (a suburb minutes east of Tampa) mall ...

Tampa: an introduction, part two

Tampa survives primarily on tourism. It brings a huge influx of cash to the area, supporting many of the year-round residents. Many part-timers (snow birds) come here to escape the winter months in the north and therefore, it has one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. The real estate market has been taken advantage of by investors, land speculators and developers. Homes that would cost $800,000 in areas ...

Tampa: an introduction

Tampa, part of the Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater metropolitan area, is usually referred to as Tampa Bay. The four-county area has about 2.7 million residents, which makes it the second largest metropolis in Florida, behind Miami/West Palm Beach, and is know for its world class tourist accommodations, outdoor sports --- including golf --- fine cuisine, and, of course, beaches.

Tampa is a Native American word, the meaning of which has been lost, though ...
