Weekend Fun

This weekend there is a smorgasbord of activities to choose from here in the St. Pete area. The first Friday of every month downtown comes alive with a giant street party on Cental Avenue from 2nd to 3rd Street.  It starts at 5:30 and lasts until 10 PM when many continue the fun at BayWalk's bars and restaurants.  Nearby, Gulfport holds it's monthly First Friday Art Walk where local artists showoff their creations and sell their work.   All the galleries and restaurants are open.

Happily the Florida Strawberry Festival began yesterday and runs through March 11th in Plant City.  Many people are drawn to the festival for it's entertainment featuring for example, Clint Black, Gretchen Wilson, Martina Mc Bride, Kenny Rodgers and Hootie and the Blowfish.  Others are attracted by the midway or the crafts.  I am drawn there for one reason, the strawberries.  I especially love the dark chocolate covered ones.  They are decadent and oh so delicious.  I indulge in the strawberry shortcake and by the time I leave I have met my strawberry quota for another year.   The Strawberry Festival is also a fantastic place to "people watch."  People from all walks of life make their way to Plant City to celebrate this delectable fruit.

If you want to celebrate Man's Best Friend this weekend, you will want to attend the Pet Fair Saturday at the Florida International Museum.  In addition to pet vendors there will be a special exhibit documentary "Dogs and more Dogs" narrated by John Lithgow.

I am leaning towards attending the Mahaffey Theater to watch the Trisha Brown Dance Company perform tonight, Friday March 2nd, at 8PM.  I love dance but unfortunately possess no poise or grace myself.

As a contrast to my more elegant experience tonight, tomorrow, Saturday, I plan to attend the 2007 Heads Up Madness Drag Race Series at the Sunshine Dragstrip.  I've attended other types of auto racing but never drag racing this will be a first.

I have only scratched the surface of the various things there are to do here this weekend. My favorite remains visiting the beach.  A day that includes a walk on our beautiful beaches is a day that overflows with blessings.  Have a great weekend wherever you are, whatever you choose to do.
