Snow tease
No, I wasn't fibbing when I posted about the snow flurries hitting the basin earlier this month. But in typical Tahoe fashion, it was just a taste of what is yet to come later this winter, not a statement of what the fall weather will be like right now.
So put the skis, boards and snowshoes back in the hall closet, and lace up your hiking boots- there's still some time to get out on the trails sans snow. In fact, this is one of the locals' favorite times to get some walking and climbing in, because the quaky aspen are in their full golden glory, standing out against the earthtones and deep greens of the pines.
One of my favorite South Shore quaky scenes is on Highway 50, between Elks Point Road (at the Round Hill Safeway) and Warrior Way at Zephyr Cove. Even with the home/ranchhouse that was built in the meadow here a few years ago, and the Hilfiger home (now Steve Wynn's) driveway on the east side of the road, this spot offers an incredible burst of aspen gold.
So get out this weekend, before the snow comes in for good and rips all the leaves off the trees, and take your camera with you.
(and for more aspen imagery, check out the Artisans International Gallery in Minden, and look for my watercolor art on display there- yes, shameless self-promotion!!!)
