Where Are All the Good Cafes in the Mission?

Before you start listing places like Ritual or Muddy Waters in answer to this question, understand my criteria. A good café, to me is not over crowded with good looking people who have either modeled for or are about to start modeling for American Apparel. Also, a good café will stay open until at least 11pm, will offer reasonably priced –if not cheap and a little swanky- beer ...

Best Hamburger in San Francisco - Outer Richmond

AT 2315 Clement Street, there is a little known (at least to non-locals) hamburger joint called Bill's Place. The only reason I know about it is I live in the area and I walked by. When I saw the "United We Stand" bumper sticker in the window, the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the red and white tile and the traditional 50s style counter I knew I had to try ...

A little bit of North Beach in, shockingly, North Beach.

North Beach is a changed neighborhood. Once the haven of punks and poets and other delightful local misfits, it's been overrun by thugish tweens with fake IDs and bad manners. It's hard to find an establishment in North Beach that isn't crawling with vacuous stares, bad grammar and worse fashion sense. But such places can still be found in this truly wonderful, historic neighborhood.

Which is why it is a superb ...

A little Germany in Hayes Valley.

Suppenküche is one of my very favorite spots in San Francisco.

Located in an unassuming yellow building on a tree infested corner of Hayes Valley, a neighborhood otherwise known (these days) for its over-priced, trendsetting, hipster boutiques, pricey wine bars and the waft of six-figure salaries on a street surrounded on all sides by a rougher and far less moneyed element, Suppenküche is a sweet relief from the prentension, if ...

Perhaps the World's Best Pancakes at Kate's Kitchen

Kates Kitchen Storefront Nestled near the corner of Fillmore and Haight streets, Kate's Kitchen has long satisfied the brunch cravings of San Francisco's scruffy Lower Haight bunch. Serving up down-home cooking with a California twist – think Midwest farmer gone organic – you're always sure to get fresh, delicious food in a homey setting ...

An exceedingly delightful brewpub in the Haight.

I am in love with Magnolia. Which is lucky for my brewmeister BF who can't get enough of a good brew pub, and Mag's (as we affectionately call it) gets better every time we go. For weekend brunch the brisket hash and the creole crabcake benedict call me with a siren song, and my butt grows ever larger with every empty plate. The burgers are divine, the pizza's fabulous and ...

Belgian Fries in SF at Fritjz

I have heard people say that they dislike fries. That fried potatoes are not their thing.

BUT to break them of their non-fried carb restriction, I take them to Fritjz. Hands down one of the best and most unique places to eat fries in SF.

With some clever and elegant dipping sauces (who knew wasabi or roasted red pepper mayo could be SO good??) and hearty portions (enough to share with a ...

How to spend an afternoon in South Park.

It's baseball season again and though the SF weather is still at its schizophrenic best, it's still a great time of year to head to South Park for an afternoon or an evening, and it doesn't even have to be on a gameday to be fun. Truly, if you dislike crowds, avoid the neighborhood on gameday.

Whether you are wandering around and looking for grub before a game, wanting a ...

A trattoria that was almost a treat.

Even as a local San Franciscan, I have a hard time remembering Russian Hill and all of the wonderful little gems it offers. So, every time I think to venture there from the foggy nest of the North Panhandle, I do so with somewhat heightened expectations.

Antica fit nicely into those expectations. I had been to the restaruant once before, years and years ago, and had always wanted to go ...
