Puerto Alegre—don't be fooled.

I'm old and stuff, so I remember Puerto Alegre circa 1997: divier, dirtier, drunker and delicious.

A lot of misguided overly nostalgic San Franciscans will tell you that Puerto Alegre is still the queso grande among the numerous Mexican eateries in the city. They are wrong. Do not be taken in by them. It used to be good, but now it's not.

Like so many things (myself included) age has ...

Best Deep Dish Pizza in San Francisco (and Bay Area)

Don't go to San Francisco expecting to find a bagel anywhere. I've looked for years, high and low, and never found a decent bagel; not like in New York, where the most amazing, mouth watering bagels can be found anywhere. The same is true for a good Chicago-style deep dish pizza. I'm not sure why it has to be like this, is it the fog? Is ...

Best little sushi bar in SF. (Shhh. Don't tell anyone.)

I used to live in the Castro and this was my regular solo sushi place. It has since become the destination for the sushi-madness moods that strike my beau and I on a regular basis. The fish is fresh and delish, the prices are stupid reasonable, the service is friendly and the place itself is cozy and comfortable.

In the transportive space you feel like you could be in Tokyo ...

The best movie-going experience. Ever.

I'd heard about the Parkway forever. Some mystical, magical place that played first-run movies, served pizza and most magical of all, offered beer to its movie-going patrons.

Needless to say I was skeptical. The fact that this wonderland was located in Oakland didn't help to convince me. Oakland is, like, totally FAR.

But at last, in the tow of the two people who had proselytized to me most enthusiastically about the ...

Reward for Morning Person

Tartine Bakery.

People line up at 8am Saturday mornings for fresh French-style pastries. Best bakery at the corner of Guerrero and 18th in the Mission.

The best buttermilk scones, pain au chocolate with Scharffen Berger Chocolate and Croque Monsieur (open-face sandwich). Not to mention all the breads, cakes and sandwiches.

It's hard to find parking in this neighborhood, but if you take BART to 16th Street or take J-Church line to ...

The best of the raw bar and beyond...

WARNING: If you are one of those freakish folks who think fish is utterly gross, or if you are slightly less freakish and simply insist on having your fish cooked, this isn't necessarily the joint for you.

Bar Crudo is the most lovely semi-recent addition to the SF restaurant rat race. It provides beautifully prepared, top-grade raw seafood at a wonderfully leisurely pace. It has a raw bar to beat ...

A beer geek's pub crawl through SF.

Let me begin with the requisite disclaimer: in order to take full advantage of the route suggested below, DITCH YOUR CAR and partake in the comfort of the leisurely public transportation system of San Francisco. Or, if you’re slightly more flush and/or impatient, taxis are always nice too. But if you start at the Beach Chalet, it’s a short walk to the Fulton 5 or the N Judah, both of ...

Eat, Drink and Be Merry Inside or Outside at Palomino

Coining themselves as “European –inspired regional American Cuisine”, Palomino serves up more than just food, it’s all about Atmosphere! Atmosphere! Atmosphere! Enjoy an afternoon or evening after work at an exciting in and outdoor eatery. This is a great social dining experience where you can catch up with friends, or use the formal dining area for a more intimate experience. The darker interior seems to ...

A Whole Lotta Burrito at Poncho Villa

Pancho Villa Street ViewAlthough other places in the states have burrito places, I've never found burritos quite like the ones in San Francisco anywhere else. That freshly grilled beef, pork or chicken or veggies with rice, your choice of beans, and many other optional toppings. All rolled up into a tortilla to create a chunk the size of ...

Cozy and classy at the Alembic.

Alembic is Magnolia Brewpub's classier and more attractive younger cousin. You like them both just fine, but when the other family members get together to talk in the corners at the reunion, they agree that as likable as Magnolia is, Alembic really just has more going for it.

The bar is made from the benches of the old Kezar stadium. The wooden floors and wainscoting come from a deconstructed barn ...
