The best little beer store in San Francisco.

The City Beer Store & Tasting Bar isn't just for beer geeks. However, if you think beer is, like, totally gross, you might have a harder time having a good time here. But you should still try it.

Craig, your insanely knowledgeable and a really cool host will turn your beer world upside down and inside out. His shelves are lined with the finest hopped, fermented and bubbled goodies in the ...

Puerto Alegre—don't be fooled.

I'm old and stuff, so I remember Puerto Alegre circa 1997: divier, dirtier, drunker and delicious.

A lot of misguided overly nostalgic San Franciscans will tell you that Puerto Alegre is still the queso grande among the numerous Mexican eateries in the city. They are wrong. Do not be taken in by them. It used to be good, but now it's not.

Like so many things (myself included) age has ...

Get your drink on, and exercise—at the same time!

It’s a lovely sunny Sunday in San Francisco. But the effects of Saturday night’s boozy indiscretions are making your head pound and you just want to dive headfirst into a bloody mary. But who wants to sit inside a dark bar on such a gorgeous day?

The solution to this dichotomous quandary is simple: get on a bike and head to the Mission, where you’ll find a high concentration of ...

Happy bar in SOMA.

Below is the email correspondence between me and my friend "Cletus" that resulted in a happy hour spent at John Colins:
Cletus: Drinks on Friday?
Me: Totally.
Cletus: Any ideas on the place?
Me: ....Um? I've gotten really bad at this picking places thing. You have any ideas?
Cletus: How about John Colins? Some people at work recommend it. (Mind you, everyone I work with is under the age of 25.)
Cletus: Sure. Might be good ...

Mangrosa in Northbeach of San Francisco

What makes a 4 1/2 star restaurant any different than a 5 star restaurant? Mangrosa, an Italian/Brazilian restaurant in the Northbeach neighborhood of San Francisco was voted a 4 ½ star rating on Cityseach and is described in the SF Zagat Guide as “where the beautiful people go”. Zagat is on the money — Citysearch could have done a little better.

Where to find/avoid tween-agers: An adult's night out in SOMA.

This is not generally the venue for snarkiness and curmudgeonly griping, but in this case it's just irresistable. In the interest of fairness, I'll say that the bad things I have to say about the Holy Cow may very well be the result of my (relatively) advanced age of 32. Maybe a 21-year-old would enjoy the top-40 hits of the '80s and '90s, the hoochie mama vibe, the leering, pimply, ...

A beer geek's pub crawl through SF.

Let me begin with the requisite disclaimer: in order to take full advantage of the route suggested below, DITCH YOUR CAR and partake in the comfort of the leisurely public transportation system of San Francisco. Or, if you’re slightly more flush and/or impatient, taxis are always nice too. But if you start at the Beach Chalet, it’s a short walk to the Fulton 5 or the N Judah, both of ...

Cozy and classy at the Alembic.

Alembic is Magnolia Brewpub's classier and more attractive younger cousin. You like them both just fine, but when the other family members get together to talk in the corners at the reunion, they agree that as likable as Magnolia is, Alembic really just has more going for it.

The bar is made from the benches of the old Kezar stadium. The wooden floors and wainscoting come from a deconstructed barn ...

The classiest happy hour: The Palace Hotel

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have a thing for hotel bars.

It started when I was five. My dad took me into the Hyatt Regency at One Embarcadero and bought me a virgin strawberry daiquiri and we tossed pennies into the big glassy fountain and I jumped on the plush couches and danced around by myself to the music being played by the nice man on the grand ...

Where Are All the Good Cafes in the Mission?

Before you start listing places like Ritual or Muddy Waters in answer to this question, understand my criteria. A good café, to me is not over crowded with good looking people who have either modeled for or are about to start modeling for American Apparel. Also, a good café will stay open until at least 11pm, will offer reasonably priced –if not cheap and a little swanky- beer ...
