The Castro Theatre Experience

Castro Theatre PicWith its emblematic sign in the heart of San Francisco's gay district, the Castro Theatre is landmark with an impressive facade, but one really needs to venture inside to get the true Castro experience.

Built in 1922 and registered as a historical San Francisco landmark in 1977, the exterior design was modeled loosely on the architectural style of cathedrals in Mexico. Once you enter through the original wooden doors, the grandeur gets even grander. A large staircase on either side of the main theater entrance leads to the mezzanine and balcony. The main theatre chamber is lavishly decorated with a variety of influences. An art deco chandelier that dates from the 1930's hangs from the center of a beautifully ornate ceiling design. To the sides of the screen are pipes from the pipe organ that a musician gleefully plays for the opening few minutes before disappearing into the floor to make way for theCastro Chandelier Pic film.

As unique and beautiful as the building and interior of the Castro Theatre is the culture of film that it has spawned. Theatregoers regularly have the opportunity to see interactive or special events productions, often with performances by the original stars or unique participatory themes. Sing along productions like The Sound of Music and Grease are a great way to see a classic flick while you belt out your favorite songs, free of shame.

I recently saw Brand Upon the Brain, a silent film by Guy Madden that featured an 11-piece orchestra, foley artists (for sound effects), a narrator and a castrato vocalist, all live before your very eyes. The overall effect was spectacular, and an experience to be remembered.

Many tourists come to the Castro district to see the historic gay center and the outside of the beautiful theater, but one should really go inside and see a film at the Castro to get the full Castro experience.
