Best Hamburger in San Francisco - Outer Richmond

AT 2315 Clement Street, there is a little known (at least to non-locals) hamburger joint called Bill's Place. The only reason I know about it is I live in the area and I walked by. When I saw the "United We Stand" bumper sticker in the window, the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the red and white tile and the traditional 50s style counter I knew I had to try it.

Bill's Place makes the best hamburgers I've ever eaten and I've never had to wait for a seat there. It's right next to the Legion of Honor, close to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Lands End hike, which has some astonishing views of the Bay and the bridge, and about seven blocks from Golden Gate Park.

It serves over a dozen different types of hamburgers, many named after little-known San Francisco celebrities. On Sunday, my husband and I went there and he ordered a chili burger (one of their specialties) and I ordered a Paul Kantner burger. Paul Kantner co-founded Jefferson Airplane and attended San Jose State. Apparently he's a burger fan too. Who would've thunk? (apparently, not me).

The burger was like a real Big Mac, with thousand island dressing and a normal sized beautifully cooked hamburger and toasted bun. It was so delicious. The French fries were the most greasy wonderful things I've eaten for a while and we topped off the high-calorie, pure-comfort-food meal with a scoop of Dreyer's ice cream in old-fashioned silver single-scoop cups.

Yummy! The only thing I'd like to warn you about is the food comma that will ensue. So, I recommend Bill's Place after the Legion of Honor, after the Golden Gate Bridge, after anything that requires any immediate energy. It's a nap-time during the middle of the day on the sandy beach next to Great Highway type of meal. Ahhhhhh.....

Don't forget to order one of their amazing shakes made with Dreyer's ice cream next time you go. I did a combo with cherry chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup and a banana, mmm!
