Memorial Day Events in San Francisco
May is almost here and it isn't too early to start planning your Memorial Day activities. Here is a brief rundown of some of the highlights for the weekend of May 26th through the 28th:
Baseball:
The Giants host the Colorado Rockies at At&T Park. Friday night is Fireworks Night. Saturday is On-Field Photo Night; the first 3,000 fans get to take pictures of the players on the field. Diamond Foods will feature local restaurants and celebrity chefs in a pre-game BBQ cook-off for "BBQ at the Ballpark". The first 20,000 fans get a chef's hat. Find out more at www.sfgiants.com
Klez-X:
Enjoy the finest in Klezmer Music as Klez-X melds modern jazz with Yidish folk and art song. The concert begins 1PM on May 26th at the Yerba Buena Gardens. Find out more at www.ybgf.org
Carnaval San Francisco
Celebrate the best of Latin American and Caribbean culture May 26-27. The theme is "Love Happens". The festivities culminate with a Grand Parade on Sunday the 27th. Carnaval runs 10AM to 6PM both days and happens on Harrison St. between 16th and 24th streets. Food, music, dance, art, crafts, fun, and, of course, amor await! Find out more at www.carnavalsf.com
Opera in the Park
The San Francisco Opera presents a free concert in Dolores Park on May 27th. The concert features operatic classics presented by artists from the summer season. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy sunny Dolores Park located at 18th and Dolores Streets. The concert starts at 2PM, but here's a hint, come early to find a parking place or better yet, ride BART to the 16th St. station (16th and Mission). Find out more at www.sfopera.com
Presidio Memorial Day Ceremony
Events begin at 10:30 am at the Presidio Main Post Parade Ground. A parade led by the 91st Division Color Guard and Pipes and Drums will proceed to the nearby National Cemetery. Formal ceremonies beginning at 11 am include historic vehicles, salute battery demos, National Cemetery tours led by National Park Service rangers, music by the Pleasanton Community Concert Band, rifle volleys by the Northern California Brigade of U.S. Volunteers, and helicopter flyovers by the California National Guard. The San Francisco National Cemetery is the oldest national cemetery on the West Coast. Established pursuant to a War Department General Order on Dec. 12, 1884, the cemetery first comprised of only 9.5 acres, was later expanded to its present 28 acres. More than 35,000 veterans and their dependents are buried here.
Park near the Presidio Officers’ Club, 50 Moraga Ave., on the Main Post. The free PresidioGo Shuttle will take visitors from the Lombard Gate to the Main Post and National Cemetery every 30 minutes. Find out more at www.predio.gov/calendar/memorial.htm
I'll post more Memorial Day events as the weekend draws nearer. Needless to say, San Francisco offers fun for the entire family, on Memorial Day and every other day of the year!
