The best place to see foreign cinema in San Francisco
The Lumiere Theater at 1576 California Street (at Polk) is one of San Francisco’s best places to see foreign films and this weekend’s US premeire of The Cop, The Criminal, and The Clownwill not disappoint.
Located one block east of Van Ness, bordering San Francisco's Russian Hill District, the Lumiere Theatre features some of the city's most adventurous independent film, foreign language cinema and documentaries. Because the Lumiere is located downtown, it’s an easy walk from most hotels and a cheap cab ride.
And judging by all of the posters for The Cop, The Criminal, and The Clown I’ve seen around the Ferry Building, Nob Hill, and Northbeach, I would guess that much of the audience will want to get their tickets early – almost unheard of at the Lumiere.
According to a recent review, The Cop, The Criminal and The Clown “follows the unpredictable escapades of petty criminal Vincent Papineau when a burglary goes awry. After stealing and re-selling a worthless painting, Vincent discovers it was filled with a fortune in cash – which inconveniently belongs to a pair of sadistic mobsters. In his quest to give them the slip, Vincent encounters two policemen who mistake him for a fellow cop who is away on holiday. Vincent seizes this opportunity and at first, segues into aprotected alter ego until things heat up – including his smoldering attraction to Lucie, a beautiful but hard-bitten female cop he’s partnered with. The situation threatens to spin irrevocably out of control when the real cop returns and steps into the chaos his doppleganger has created.”
Seems interesting enough and worth a lovely stroll through San Francisco’s city capital up to the Lumiere.
