Easter with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

SisterOf the many ways in which a discerning San Francisco resident or visitor could spend their Easter Sunday, one of the most, um, unique, and oh so San Francisco is to spend it with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their annual Easter celebration in Dolores Park.

This year's theme is Night of the Living Easter – even though it's in the day – hmmm. The festivities include a Children's Easter event at 11 a.m., an over-the-top Bonnet Contest at 1 p.m. (they give Beach Blanket Babylon a run for their money), and a Hunky Jesus contest at 3 p.m.

With a breathtaking view of the San Francisco skyline, live music, and lots and lots of fabulous, friendly people having a lot of fun, you can't go wrong at this nontraditional Easter extravaganza.

"Why such a strange celebration from a group of drag queens dressed as nuns?" You ask. "And who the heck are the sisters anyway?" I assure you, it's all for a good cause...

This group of philanthropic drag queens got their start by a chance donation of nuns habits for a theater production in the late 1970's. Soon, the habits were being put to use as part of the flamboyant costumes for sisters with names like Sister Hysterectoria and Sister Missionary Position, who held fundraising events for charitable organizations. This tradition of flamboyance and charity with an element of shock continues to this day. Now with 28 groups spanning nine countries, this group of sisters is really making a difference.
