THE WINERY GUIDE: A Closer Look At Wilson Winery

One thing (of many) that makes visiting wine country so much fun is, as you drive around from one giant winery to another you pass lots of other, lesser known wineries. Now, just because a winery is smaller or lesser known does not mean that it is of smaller or lesser quality. Actually, often it is just the opposite. Smaller wineries with smaller production rates are frequently family owned and operated. This usually translates to more interesting labels, friendly and knowledgeable staff that is truly invested in the well being of the winery, wine makers who have more time to develop and experiment with blends and techniques, a cozy atmosphere...in short a more unique experience, not to mention a taste of a wine you probably couldn't find anywhere else.

Recently someone commented on one of my other posts asking if I knew anything about Wilson Winery. As I love going wine tasting...well, drinking wine in general...and I do read and consider the comments on my posts, I am happy to pass this information along.

Since moving to wine country my husband and I have had lots of house guests. Yes, I do think that our guests come to enjoy our company, but I'd be very naive if I didn't think they were also coming to visit because of our proximity to all wine country has to offer...you know...wine!

After a number of guests asked us to recommend wineries for them to visit we realized that we were sending people to the same few places all of the time. While we are happy to give business to our favorite establishments I also thought it would be nice for our guests if we knew about more of the wineries in the area. The result of this idea was me putting together a score sheet and us making a trip out now and again to visit new and uncharted frontiers of wineries fresh to our pallet. Our guests get to hear about a winery that they may not have otherwise, and I get to have an excuse to visit a winery and drink some vino. It's a win-win if you ask me.

These are my findings on Wilson Winery, including an over all score card of our experience, a score card for the wines we tasted and general info. Scoring is on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best and 1 being the worst. A zero means the the winery did not have that feature. I am not a wine aficionado, but I have tasted a lot of different wines and know what I like. If anyone has been to Wilson Winery I'd love to hear your comments as well...

RissaLou,

Thanks for posting info on this winery. After viewing the enclosed map, I now remember I saw their sign on the way to my favorite winery, Drycreek. I definitely want to visit this winery. Are there any other small treasures out there?

[...] As I said in a previous post, while being able to visit big name wineries is fun, one of the biggest advantages of a trip to wine country is seeking out the smaller wineries with unique blends and eclectic atmospheres.  Today I will tell you of another small family owned winery we've tried: Frick Winery. RissaLou,

I had the chance to visit the Wilson winery this past week. It was excellent. I especially liked the Tori Zin. As a matter of fact, I joined their club and had a few bottles shipped to my house. The next time I'm in CA I plan to visit a few other small wineries including Frick. I look forward to your write up of these to help with the selection for my next visit.
