San Francisco Ferry System

As was just recently noted here on the site, there are many different methods of getting around the city of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. One of my favorite ways of getting around, although it is the one which I have occasion to use least often, is the ferry system. Perhaps it is simply by virtue of the fact that I am originally from the desert of Arizona, but I find it completely enthralling to be able to ride the water to get to some of the places that I want to go.

The route that I tend to take most often is the Alameda / Oakland ferry. It picks me up right near my North Beach home at Pier 41. Usually I’ll make a stop at the arcade museum to play a little bit of Ms. Pacman and sometimes I’ll be bad for my body and get those terrific little fried donuts at Pier 39 before catching the ferry. I always head to the top deck, where I can feel the Bay breeze as the boat makes its way over to the East Bay. Whether I’m going to visit my friend’s Beads and Rocks store in Berkeley or catching a downtown concert in Oakland, getting across the water via ferry always makes me feel like I’m on vacation even though this is now the place I call home!
