Mark Your Calendar: 2007 SF Events

by Kathryn Vercillo

It doesn’t matter when you visit San Francisco because it is a city in which there is always something going on.  There are activity options for nearly every interest under the sun and there are usually special events happening to keep even the most ardent purveyor of new stimuli busy during a San Francisco exploration.  However, there are some annual staples which you might want to mark on your calendar so you can consider timing a trip around them.

  • January
    • Sea Lions Return To The Pier – These beautiful creatures which come to rest at Pier 39 may have left for the winter but they’ll be back sometime in January so be sure to see them if you are in the city.
  • February
    • Sex Worker Art Show – San Francisco was the first city in which strippers formed a union and this type of industrious appreciation of the sex worker industry is celebrated with a night of performance art which shouldn’t be missed.
    • Chinese New Year – Chinatown is filled with the glorious parade along with other events to mark the new year.
  • March
    • Flower and Garden Show – The beautiful aroma of flowers fills the air for nearly a week each March.
    • Street Performer’s Festival – They make up an important part of the fabric of San Francisco’s culture so catch them in action when they’re all in one place!
  • April
    • Cherry Blossom Festival – Not only do the beautiful cherry blossoms open their buds but Japantown opens itself up with two weeks of events and entertainment.
  • May
    • Bay to Breakers – Described far too simple as a race from the bay to the ocean, this activity brings people in costumes to revel in the streets throughout an entire weekend.
    • Carnaval – A San Francisco twist on this Brazilian holiday gives everyone a chance to enjoy the heart of the Mission.
  • June
    • Pride Parade – Of all the Gay Pride events which take place throughout the world in celebration of equality and diversity, San Francisco’s is bound to be the one with the most fun for everyone!
  • July
    • Garlic Festival – Garlic can be more than just a condiment for your bread.
  • August
    • Burning Man – It’s not actually in San Francisco but the proportion of San Franciscans who attend this event is so high that it might as well be!
  • September
    • Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival – Music, entertainment and a spot on the bay compliment the samples of chocolate you can get for cheap all weekend long.
    • San Francisco Blues Festival – Who knew that having the blues could be so much fun?
    • Folsom Street Fair – San Francisco is a city in which people are allowed to just be who they are.  If you want to check out the fans of leather and latex, this is the chance to do it without social repercussions.
  • October
  • November
  • December
    • Holiday Season – Union Square will be all lit up again before you know it and Christmas tree lightings will take place nearly every weekend throughout the month.

It may be only January, but the year will fly by before you can blink an eye.  If San Francisco is on your list of destinations for 2007, make your plans in advance to get the most out of every moment!
