In Pursuit of Happyness in SF

by Kathryn Vercillo

Whether you live in San Francisco or simply love the city, you should make it a point to go see In Pursuit of Happyness.  Even if it turns out that you don’t like the movie for its artistic merit or heartwarming story, you will get the chance to enjoy two hours of watching San Francisco scenery pass by your eyes.  It’s always fun to watch movies and to be able to say, “I’ve been there” or “I know that street”, and In Pursuit of Happyness lets San Franciscans do exactly that.

In Pursuit of Happyness also paints a terrific picture of life in San Francisco in the early 1980’s, a picture which will amuse and entertain those who knew the city then as well as those visiting the city today.  While it is the story of just six months in just one man’s life, it appropriately incorporates history and landmarks and a look at San Francisco culture so that others can recognize their own experiences there.  The behavior of cab drivers, BART riders, Financial District employees and the culturally diverse communities which interact with one another all capture the true experiences of what it is like to live in this dynamic area, rubbing shoulders daily with people from all walks of life.

This opportunity to experience diversity in many forms is one of the greatest things which San Francisco offers.  It is the reason why people come to visit the area and the reason why people stay.  To see it on screen within the walls of a touching true tale just helps remind us of it.  The movie can be seen at major theatres in the city including The Metreon and the Van Ness Theatre as well as at more locally-frequented theatres including the Sundance Kabuki and Balboa Theatre.
