San Diego County Fair - 2007
Where can you and your family go for a day of big grins and chuckles from engaging in or watching such activities as Turkey Stampedes, Prune Pit Spitting Contests, Luche Libre, and Ostrich/Camel Racing? Now does that means the Ostriches will be racing the Camels? I'm not sure how that works, but anyway, I'm sure you've guessed it - the San Diego County Fair.
The 2007 San Diego County Fair will run 22 days, from Friday, June 8 through Wednesday, July 4. The Fair will be closed three Mondays and two Tuesdays (closed June 11-12, 18-19 and 25). Their "Salute to Heroes" theme will celebrate international, national and local heroes, both human and animal
Yes, it's that time of year again when we look forward to eating deep-fried twinkies, and corndogs-on-a-stick...And speaking of fair food, you can look forward to a few new yummies this year including, but not limited to:
Rattlesnake Ranch - Try some rattlesnake chili or rattlesnake bites at this new food booth. It's a Southwestern delicacy that, of course, tastes just like chicken!
Beef Sundae - A mountain of mashed potato "ice cream" smothered with a meat-sauce "topping" and crowned with a "cherry" tomato.
Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich - Wanna try this sweet sandwich treat?
Deep-Fried Cola - You take some flour, cola syrup and secret ingredients, mix them together into a batter, deep-fry it, put it in a cup and pour more cola syrup over it. A real delicacy.
Entertainment-wise, the fair offers something for everyone. One of my favorite acts to catch every year is the hilarious HYPNOTISM show by Master Hypnotist Mark Yuzuik. He is counted as one of the top hypnotist entertainers in the field. You can count on lots of laughs with this one. Mark performs almost daily, at 5:00 and 7:00 PM. Don't Miss The Hypnosis Show!!! Fun, fun, fun!
There are several TRIBUTE bands this year, including the Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band. I caught their show in Vegas and was utterly amazed by them. I highly recommend them. You can also catch Dead Man's Party - an Oingo Boingo trib band, Dirty Frank (Pearl Jam trib), Alice Unchained (Alice in Chains trib), Wild Child (Doors trib), The Battle of Los Angeles (Rage Against the Machine Tribute), and my fave, Cash'd Out - a Johnny Cash tribute band that I can vouch for being excellent.
Every night features a big name band and you can catch performances by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Wailers, Kenny Loggins, Englebert Humperdinck, LeeAnn Rimes, All American Rejects, Paul Anka, Weird Al Yankovic, REO Speedwagon, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and much more. Some performances are included with fair entrance, but others require a special ticket purchase. Joan Jett is included with fair entrance and that's the one I want to see the most, so lucky me.
There's so much more to see, taste, listen to, and experience at the fair this year. I hope you all go, and have a ball. Don't forget the sunscreen, a hat, walking shoes, and in case you have special nutritional concerns, or just want to take your own food, YOU CAN take food in with you!
