Before you hit the waves, load up on good grub at Pipes Cafe in Cardiff By The Sea. Their breakfast menu will help you load up on the perfect protein/carb combo for a perfect day at the beach. Don't worry about what to wear, their motto is "no shirt, no shoes, no problem."
The Pipes egg burritos, a bargain at $4.25, are fat and juicy. Besides eggs, you can add sausage, bacon, ham, potatoes, avocado, or green chiles along with pica sauce to satisfy your palette. If you're into more traditional breakfast items, there's a variety of egg scramblers served with potatoes and toast, and of course, pancakes and french toast plates too. For something different, try the Pipes egg sandwich --- eggs, bacon, cheese and tomato served with mayo on a toasted English muffin. This is NOT your typical egg McMuffin sandwich.
If you've just got time for a jolt of caffeine, skip Starbucks and belly up to Pipes' Coffee Bar. Along with a choice of 3 freshly brewed coffees, they have an eclectic choice of coffee drinks. The Mexican Hot Chocolate is smooth and will easily fix any chocolate craving. Or try the Baja Mocha which has a blend of espresso, Ibarra chocolate, cinnamon and steamed milk. Tasty and warm on a foggy morning!
Lunch features the usual fare of salads, sandwiches and burgers. But eating out on the deck on a sunny day can't be beat. The train rolls by every so often, and beyond the tracks is the glistening Pacific.
Often the line at Pipes is out the door, but service is fast and friendly. One very important thing to remember in this age of debit cards is that Pipes is a cash only establishment. Even your platinum American Express card will do you no good here.
After you order food at the cashier, grab a window seat at the Hawaiian print topped counter and people watch, if the outdoor deck is full. Listen for the waitress to call your name as she exits the kitchen, and you'll have your food in no time. Don't forget to grab a Pipes t-shirt or Frisbee for the beach, and get to Pipes before 3:00 p.m. to avoid the "Gone Surfing" sign.
