The Best Scones You Will Ever Eat
My latest addiction is a scone. Now, I’m sure you have all had tasty scones before – you buy them at your local coffee shop to go with your overpriced coffee, but once you taste these scones you will never go back to those dry, three-dollar, flour pucks. The scones I am taking about can be found at the Village Mill Bread Company in Del Mar. Once you walk into this tiny shop you will be overwhelmed by the warm aromas wafting through the air. It just feels like a morning (and a good one at that) when you come through that door and your glasses fog up with the scent of baking. They are actually better known for their breads and those are delicious as well. Their challah is the best I have ever eaten, and their potato rolls make any meal complete. But, for me, it is all about those scones. They have chocolate and blueberry, but every time I go for the chocolate. It is slightly crisp on the outside and yet fluffy and moist inside with just the right proportion of chocolate chips. And then to make it beyond fantastic it is drizzled with thin streams of icing. Yummy! And all this for the bargain price of $1.75! If I ever need to be to work early then this little bake shop is the only way I am able to roust myself out of bed by promising a scone as my reward. And, a great thing about this shop is that it is just a nice place to go – you really feel that they care there. Once, after ordering my usual scone I was asked if I had ever tried one of their cinnamon pull-aparts. I hadn’t (not wanting to ever waver from my standard scone order) so he threw a whole one in the bag for me to try later. (It was indeed quite delicious). They have coffee too – it is serve yourself and their sizes only come in small and large. But, this is what I love about this place. It is the antithesis to every mega-chain out there and once you get a taste you will find you can’t stay away. The Village Mill Bread Company is located at:
