Breakfast in the News: A Daily Treat!
Whether your dream breakfast is served at 7 AM or 2 PM, you’re likely to find it among the headlines at the Daily News Cafe in coastal Carlsbad. Long a favorite of area locals, the indoor/outdoor eatery is a popular tourist destination during the summer. With a varied menu ranging from breakfast burritos to French toast and beyond, the Daily News is famous for its generously-sized omelettes, served with side dishes such as crispy hash browns or just-harvested strawberries. Owner Bob Ruane reports that the California omelette – bursting with fresh tomatoes, avocado, and jack cheese – is his most-ordered item and a clear favorite among his loyal clientele.
Beginning at 11 AM each day a lunch menu is also offered, although breakfast entrees remain available until the restaurant closes its doors at 4 PM. On a recent spring afternoon more than half of the diners we surveyed were ordering breakfast, despite the time of day. Busy servers carried plates of omelettes and carafes of steaming coffee to diners seated at attractive outdoor tables overlooking lush landscaping.
Set alongside the Pacific Coast Highway at its intersection with Carlsbad Village Drive, the Daily News has plenty of seating indoors, yet tourists and locals alike seem to prefer dining al fresco, only a few short steps from the beach. The restaurant’s signature blue canopies offer shelter from the mid-day sun, while reliable coastal breezes keep diners cool even on the warmest days of the summer season.
Winner of a “Best Service” award from local publication The Entertainer, the Daily News opened its doors in 1990 and has developed into a local favorite among those in the know. Expect to wait a bit during the morning or noon-hour rush; yet at most times you can find indoor seating if you’re willing to accept it. Arriving at an off-peak hour gives you a better chance of securing an outdoor location, perfect for people-watching.
