Sacramento Farmer’s Market

Row after row of booths featuring tasty fruits and vegetables interspersed with flowers, cheese, olive oil, meat, and fish invite me to downtown Sacramento on Sunday mornings. As I near the exit off Highway 50 on 10th St., I see interesting old neighborhoods, the brick buildings of the YMCA, and hundreds of beautiful trees. Mmmmm, nice setting for a farmer’s market, but where is it? Over in Southside Park? Maybe on a blocked-off neighborhood street near the capital? No. It is located directly under Highway 50 at W and 8th St. For the earthquake-initiated or the romantic, this doesn’t look good. But let yourself be drawn in and soon you’ll only see the familiar vendors and inviting products. Have some coffee, pastry, and samples; ask for recipes; dream of dinner. Your mood about the place will change and you’ll find yourself thinking: “Nice use of public space!”, “Great shade in summer!”, and my favorite, “Easy freeway access!”
