Sunday Afternoon Walk across Golden Gate Bridge
One of the nice things about Palo Alto is that it is just one hour away from San Francisco. There is a supposed quote from Mark Twain: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." And it's true that in the summer, it's generally much colder in San Francisco than it is in Palo Alto. But on a sunny day in winter, San Francisco is not only stunningly beautiful, but sometimes suprisingly warm. It was like that today.
Walking back and forth across Golden Gate Bridge is a quintessential San Francisco experience. And I highly recommend that you give it a try. The bridge is 1.7 miles long (3.4 miles back and forth). It's often windy and cooler on the bridge, so dress in layers. Of course, you should also wear comfortable shoes.
You can park your car at either the San Francisco or Sausalito side of the bridge. If you aren't sure that you want to do the entire walk back and forth, you should be park at the vista point on the northern (Sausalito) side, so that you can look across at the San Francisco skyline.
