Another City has Money to Burn

A few years ago the City of Newport Beach painted their police cars white. It was in keeping with the coastal theme. Now that time has passed it has been decided that white is not professional for a police car-so for $20,000 they are painting the cars back to black.

Call me next time you decided to spend money wastefully. You make a decision stick with it.

Old Glory Boat Parade

The Newport Harbor will be hosting a July 4th boat parade. The decoration theme is America is beautiful. The parade will start at 1 p.m.-followed by a barbeque with liv music and dancing at the American Legion Newport Harbor Post 215 15th Street. Any boat that floats is welcome in the parade.

The city of Newport Beach is hosting a summer concert series. Tonight kicks off the first concert at Bob Henry Park at 6 pm featuring Upstream. The concerts are free, just bring along a chair and blanket and get set to enjoy an evening of great music.

The red bathing suits and swim caps are a sign that summer has officially arrived in Newport Beach and the Junior Lifeguard Program is busting with young swimmers and lifeguards to be. Had I grown up in Newport Beach I would have been a participant of this program every summer. I am still trying to figure out a way to join.
The program is open to children ages 9-15 who receive lessons on ocean and beach safety first aid and the basics of being a lifeguard during the program. There is a competition each day.
There are so many participants for the program, about 600 that there are morning and afternoon sessions.
It is a fantastic program run by the city.

Meet the Author of The Devil Wears Prada

Lauren Weisberger will be at the Newport Beach public library on Thursday to promote her knew book, Chasing Harry Winston. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the main library. While the event is free there is a suggested $10 donation.

I can only imagine what "Chasing Harry Winston" is about. I loved The Devil Wears Prada for what is was worth. A fun book at the beach. All of her bemoaning her boss bothered me. "Suck it up or quit" The unfortunate reality of life is some of us end up working for unreasonable control freaks. You created the monster, by catering to her just right temperature Starbucks and chasing down copies of Harry Potter. You also reaped the benefits of designer clothes and handbags.

I just simply do not feel that bad for you. So far I have thought the author has been a one hit wonder. We shall see if "Chasing Harry Winston" is really worth the chase.

Newport Beach Library Summer Reading Program

Mark you calendars for June 21st-summer solistice-yes and the beginning of the summer reading program at the library. This is a great way for both adults and children to read a book and win some fabulous prizes from the library. Even better than that, expand your world. Read the reviews of others-I enjoy reading other's reviews and getting great or not so great suggestions from other patrons on books I may never have selected.

Corona del Mar 5K

June 7th marks the annual Corona del Mar 5k run. This is one of my favorite runs to do for a variety of reasons. The race course itself is a great run. You start and finish by the ocean. It is hard to lose your motivation on a run when you are surrounded by other runners. However if you find your attention wavering and your legs aching you will receive plenty of encouragement along the course. Corona del Mar residents are out there in full force shouting words of encouragement and playing music to help you along the run. And then of course there is the after the run food. The restaurants of CDM put on a great spread. One of the best spreads I have seen at any race, with eggs, sausages, salads and other tasty morsels.
This run is truly a fun day so mark the calendar.

Balboa Island Artist Walk

Balboa Island is always an enjoyable place to walk around. The homes are beautiful, the gardens are full of well groomed blooming flowers and it is an island, so as you walk around the boardwalk you can always see the water.

Next Sunday, May 18th is the Artist Walk. Artist's will have their paintings, sketches, drawings, sculptures and other crafts out on display around the boardwalk.

Hopefully the June gloom will be gone so all can enjoy the day under sunny skies. The parking is always limited on the island, so grab a spot on Bayside instead.

Get to Taste Test Ice Cream

I scream, you scream we all scream for ice cream. If the weather cooperates and warms up again, I will be craving ice cream. Hagen Daz Ice Cream store at Fashion Island is having consumers participate in selecting the flavor of ice cream they will stocking in the store. Starting Monday between 4-8 pm consumers can get a single scoop of Vanilla Honey Bee and Green tea flavor.
Depending on what is popular that will be the choice of the next flavor in the store. I must confess my votes will be for Vanilla Honey Bee. While I have not tried Hagen Dazs Green tea I have tried this flavor before and it is not my favorite.
