Junior Lifeguard Camp
As a child all I ever wanted to do in the summer time was go away to camp. Sleeping in bunks, roasting marshmellows and spending your days in the lake was the perfect way to spend a summer.
Newport Beach has one of the best summer camps for children ages 9-12-Junior Lifeguards. Adorned in red, which is the mandatory unifrom-white t-shirts and red bathing suits and shorts courtesy of Quiksilver the camp teaches 600 children the lessons of water safety and beach survival skills.
The program lasts for 8 weeks and runs two sessions each day, a morning and afternoon session.
If you live in the Newport Beach area, you are probably familiar with the throngs of children riding their biclycles onto the Pennisula. Had I grown up here this would have been the camp for me. I love swimming, having lifeguarded as a college student and particpated in on the school synchronized swim team.
What better activity for your child to participate in. In addition to learning basic water skills, your child is sure to get in shape and develop self confidence and new friends.
The highlight of the program for some is jumping of the pier, high speed boat bailouts and running the Monster Mile.
Enrollment for the camp began in March. Each participant is required to take a swimtest in February as children are divided into groups based on age and swimming ability.
To be a child again. Junior Lifeguards would be my summer pastime. The City of Newport Beach puts on a fantastic program.
